  1. Purchased a new 2023 Axis T220 with M6, son was surfing cruising right along at 3500rpm. Had about 5 seconds of odd engine surging followed by “clunk” noise immediately followed by engine alarm. I put it in neutral immediately and shut it down. Burning smell coming from under the transom. Towed back in. Dealer said transmission is “toast” and waiting on a new one from Malibu. Followed all engine break in cautiously. While waiting 2 hours for sherif to give us a tow, winds picked up and we got close to the rocks. Luckily had a box anchor and once depth shot from 150ft to 20ft about 100ft from shore the anchor was able to hold us. Wife is now freaked out about it happening again with the 2 little guys with us. I’m assuming this is not common? This is our first newer boat. Very happy the way our dealer is taking care of it quick but I’m concerned for what the future holds mechanically.
  2. This is a Hail Mary…talk to me like I’m a 5 year old… Was cruising leisurely across the lake when it felt like the boat slipped out of gear. No forward, but reverse still worked. Towed to the dock. I pulled the tranny cover off and when I shifted into forward, ATF _gushed_ out of somewhere. Had to remove a bunch of stuff to get at it (panel with three big electrical clips, gas line, etc) but it appears to be coming from a hole on the housing itself. No threads that I can see, it looks like maybe a ball bearing is supposed to plug it? Had a couple guys come out and they had never seen this before. They said the sensors on either side blow all the time, but this little piece isn’t even on the diagrams. Trying and failing to imbed pictures: https://ibb.co/wg9364y - screwdriver pointing at hole/port https://ibb.co/Qm3tgnp - general location (before dismemberment)
  3. 2003 Malibu LXI transmission won't go into gear. While dewinterizing my boat this past weekend, the friend doing the work noticed that there was a connector that had come apart on the starboard rear of the engine near the transmission. The connector had several pins and when my friend reconnected it, it seemed to go together just fine and locked in with a clip. He theorized he must have accidentally pulled the connection apart while winterizing the boat the previous fall. When we got to the lake this past Saturday, we dropped the boat into the water, brought it up to temperature and tried to back it off the trailer. When I tried to engage the transmission, absolutely nothing happened. There was no resistance and it simply would not go into forward to reverse. I assumed it was the connector plug that had come loose since there were no issues when we had it on the water last time we used it, but after pulling it apart and reconnecting it several times, still nothing happened. It's hard for me to believe that it is a coincidence that the transmission won't engage since there were no issues the last time we used the boat and this was the only thing that had changed. A couple questions for anybody that might know: Does the ECM control the transmission? Since I started the engine after the connector had come loose and before we found the problem, Is it possible to ECM stopped identifying the transmission and needs to be reset to factory specs to once again initialize and power the transmission? I had it happen with my Dodge truck once, the four-wheel drive would not work but begin working again after I disconnected the battery to change it out and the ECM lost power. My assumption is that The ECM reset when the power was pulled and again identified and enabled the four-wheel drive actuator after a new battery was installed and power was returned to the ECM. If it is just a coincidence that that connector had come loose and now the transmission doesn't work, what other issues could it be? I hope someone can help me with this issue as the Malibu shop is quite a long distance from my home. Thank you very much in advance should anyone be able to point me in the right direction for getting my transmission to once again engage.
  4. Looking for guidance on root cause for repeated failure of Indmar Monsoon 350 transmission mount bushings (Mainly on the port side). I have a 2009 Wakesetter VLX Around 30th November 2020 (380hrs) I noticed some fragments of torn soft rubber in the bilge and quickly traced it to mangled lower transmission mount bushings on both sides. The upper bushings were fine. This is what the remains of the trashed bushings looked like in situ: Port: https://photos.app.goo.gl/E6WBZjUVtdkpmrp57 Stbd: https://photos.app.goo.gl/6b2Dg4JhBdsjyeM56 I replaced both bushings with Indmar OEM items on 10th December 2020. I reinspected the bushings on the 4th Jan 21 at 395 hours and I was surprised to see signs of tearing on the upper part of the port side bushing already (you can still see traces of the green dish-soap used to help press the bushing in) https://photos.app.goo.gl/fxLhR7XMEzbmaBNq5 The Stbd bushing appears to be mostly ok with some minor signs of damage on the upper section This weekend past (6-7 March 2021) I noticed that the top section of bushing on the port side has separated completely and when I felt around the bottom edge of the bushing against brass nut and steel washer mate , I can feel tearing there too. I have tightened the lower nut and washer but I don't have the specific torque settings to confirm so, I have just tightened it until the busing material mushrooms past the washer by approx 1/4" We surf regularly. I have an Acme 1235 prop, full factory MLS ballast, plus 2 x 550lb rear and 1 x 600lb front, suction-cup surf-gate and a modified hi-lift (downforce) wedge (extra ~300lbs) as per this thread : I have watched the bushings when under surf towing power and it seems the port bushing is significantly compressed/deformed (which makes sense due to the loading and torque response corresponding to the direction of prop rotation). I had a mechanic check the prop shaft and coupling and he was happy that the prop shaft is straight and the coupling aligned without doing a full realignment exercise. We arrived at one view being, that the additional load was a likely cause of the excessive movement in the mount. We also discussed potentially changing to a firmer bushing material (e.g. polyurethane) in that specific application (lower port side) Various other conversations with dealers and distributors have not revealed any new information other than one opinion that even with the additional loads this should not be happening and suggested that something else is wrong or perhaps lower nut/washer may be too loose. (I don't have accurate torque specs for those yet but I tightened them until they mushroomed past the washer by about 1/4") Main mounts look fine but it it is difficult to see their condition inside. Has anyone else had similar experience and found a solution or else, have sensible suggestions as to how I may approach this? Thanks in advance
  5. Hey! Have had 3 of the 4 bolts that connect the transmission to the prop shaft shear while driving. once pulling tubes, once surfing, and once just cruising 22 miles per hour. no nicks on prop and shaft seems to be perfectly true (no vibration). have used loctite on bolts even with the lock nuts. bolts don't seem worn, they are sheared in the center where the two plates come together.
  6. O7 VTX, never an issue, other than having to replace the coupler bolts on the drive shaft. Yesterday, it just stopped going into gear. It was sudden, no slipping under load. I have checked the drive shaft coupler bolts, all 4 are there and tight. I have checked the cable, even unhooked it and shifted manually, still no gear. I hear some noise when I put it in gear, but it's not horrible. The noise sounds like it's in the v-drive, not in the trans, but it's hard to tell for sure. The noise is different in forward than in reverse, so I think that the trans is engaging. I don't see the drive shaft even trying to turn. What else can I look at. Is the a shear pin in the v-drive? A key of some sort on the output connecting plate? Help, I'm in the middle of my vacation. I think I have enough tools to pull the v-drive unit, but not sure what to look for.
  7. Hoping you guys have some input. Have a 2013 LSV Wakesetter w/ ~315 hrs that is babied. Had it de-winterized in April, and after less that 5 hours on the water, the drive shaft breaks (had not hit anything). After 2 weeks at the dealership (they are WAY backed up), mechanic goes to install new shaft and realizes vdrive is locked up. Btw, vdrive and transmission fluid were flushed during de-winterization. Tells me fluid is burnt up and bearings had gone out. Now says we have to replace the vdrive AND transmission because they “don’t do them separately”. Part is 4K from Indmar (apparently original manufacturer) with no actual eta. With the research I’ve done it seems like a possible Walter rebuild or even new Walter Vdrive would be a less costly alternative. And nowhere does it say anything about requiring BOTH vdrive and transmission. Is this standard (ie automatically refers to both when talks about replacing vdrive)? With this cost, plus the cost of replacing the drive shaft and prop rebuild I’m feeling a little nauseous. Any suggestions/input would be appreciated. Even if it just sets my mind at ease that what I’m being told is right.
  8. This past week it seemed that the transmission “slipped” a couple of times. Once in forward while moving from idle to “idle+” while picking up a skier, and in pretty quick succession it did the same thing in reverse. Both times it “slipped” and kind of slammed into gear before I had a chance to bring it to neutral. I brushed it off as going to quickly from neutral to a bit past idle. Skied for another 2-3 hours without any issues. Also, FWIIW, I’m pretty gentle on the throttle. The following day, I was pulling up a skier (after running just fine for 2+ hours) and it did it again. I was on the throttle quite a bit and it got out of the hole fine, slipped at 15 mph or so, and I pulled it back to neutral before it slammed into gear. Drove at varying speeds and in and out of gear on the way back to the house and it didn’t repeat. My wife drove to the ramp 10-15 mph for 1.5 miles) without issue too. Dealership did a quick check of trans fluid, it’s at a good level and clean. They are going to do a water test next week (which is pretty awesome that I have the rest of the week off and it’s going to be 80s...) I asked them to check the prop key to see if that could be a possibility too. Also, I’ll define a “slip” as going from in gear and having power to high rev and no power. I couldn’t tell if it was a no power or low power situation as it happened so quickly. Any thoughts would be awesome, and I’ll update once the dealership gets back to me. Needless to say they are pretty busy. Thanks crew!
  9. Hey there again gang, So I've got my 2000 Malibu VLX in the shop because I had a transmission fluid leak I couldn't track down. It's a very reputable shop and they determined that the leak was coming from the hoses. I've got no problem letting them do the job but I'm sitting around waiting for them to get the hoses delivered and they are telling me they've been ordered but they have no idea when they will be in. Seems odd in this day and age of technology that they wouldn't get a tracking number or estimated delivery from whomever they buy them from. Is there an off the shelf replacement for transmission lines/hoses? Someplace I can go buy them and be like "here ya go guys, put em in?" Kyle
  10. I just purchased a 2003 Malibu Response LXI and am changing the transmission oil. The dipstick for the transmission fluid is the screw in type. From the manual, it looks like I should measure it without screwing the dipstick in. However, even without screwing the dipstick in, it shows that it's about an inch over the full line. Is this because the engine is cold and the fluids have drained from the hoses back into the transmission? Is that why the manual says to check it two minutes after the engine is turned off? I do have the old ATF oil in a container so I can put the same amount back in. I just want to be sure it wasn't over-filled previously.
  11. Hi, I need help because I don't know what is happening. It stays in neutral all the time. The transmission just stop working all of the sudden. I had just arrived at my dock and was starting the maneuver to park when suddenly, no movement at all forward or backward. The engine was working properly as the RPM increased with the power I was giving the handle, but no propelling at all. Forward or backward was the same behavior. RPM going up, engine running, but no propelling. Does anyone had had a similar problem? What seems like the problem? Thank you, Joel
  12. It's time for me to change fluids in my 2001 Sunsetter vlx with the 5.7L Indmar 325HP Monsoon 350ci EFI. My question is how many quart does the engine take? How many quarts of 30weight oil does the vdrive take? What kind of transmission fluid and how many quarts does it take? Also does the transmission fluid and the vdrive oil need to be pumped out or is it drained via a drain plug? Where do you pour in the new trans fluid and oil?
