  1. I have neglected my dripping shaft seal for too long... its time to dry out that bilge. Good Morning Crew, I have an '87 Sunsetter. I am planning to replace the old-school rope/packing seal with the Flex Gland Shaft Seal setup... https://skidim.com/flex-gland-system-1.html Does anybody have experience with these? Are they as good as they look? Also, a bit of square windshield trivia... does anybody know the prop shaft diameter on an '87 Sunsetter? It would be cool to get it ordered before the next time I will be able to take an actual measurement.
  2. Hello All, the questions are at the bottom and made bold. just wanted to give some preface Im in the process of picking up a project square windsheild 'bu. it will be my first true inboard boat (yes, im really excited for it). the hull looks to be in great shape, only one hit on the keel towards the bow of the boat. the floors are solid, i removed the board behind the engine and the plywood looked like new. the seats are rough and wherever there are rips the wood frame has rotted through. the strut, driveshaft and rudder seem to replaced in recent times, all solid with little to no play. i love the retro look of it, reminds me of the era of pop up head lamps and synth pop. So far, im aware that: -ill likely have to replace the stringers in the future (although when i went to see the boat in person, i poked around the engine mounts and the wood seemed solid). -replace/remodel interior (its a shame since its the original and its not too far gone. ill try to maintain the retro feel of this interior) -make new swim platform and brackets out of teak and alu-minimum Upgrades im hoping to install: -tower and bimini (ordered an origin catapult w/ collapsible bimini; was debating whether i should get a top mount roswell area 53, but ended going with a side mount due to concerns over the structural integrity of the deck. often im towing around 200lb dudes who can cut real hard) -ballast system (bags for now, but when the new interior is going in, ill probably make hard tanks under rear seats and in the ski locker, with level sender and a microchip w/ screen to control it) -perfect pass (just not sure whether gps or paddle wheel; any advise here will go a long way) -nav system/fish finder (yea itll be used for some light fishing... go figure) -heater core and fan (here in canada, our lakes hardly go above 18 degrees celsius, this one is must and will probably go in with the new interior) -surfpipe on the exhaust -maybe trim/surf tabs (would like to see how far the stock hull with the addition of a wedge will get us. from what i understand, these sytems are mostly used to clean up the wake if the boat is imbalanced. i could be entirely wrong on that) question time! What engine is usually found in these boats? looks like a chevy 350 to me but id want to confirm that before ordering all new consumable parts (carburetor, starter, distributor, alternator, water pump, thermostat, fuel pump and so on) What performance modifications have people been sucessful with? im thinking carb, intake manifold, camshafts. the exhaust systems on these boats im not familliar with and not sure how to gain performance there. What are the benefits of a gps cruise control vs paddlewheel? apart from the obvious of more consistency. can you really justify the extra money if you are not a tournament rider? Do I absolutely need a tandem axle trailer? The boat is being sold with a 2005 single axle correct craft trailer. at only 3000lbs can i justify upgrading the trailer? Any other details I should pay antention to when I go water test the boat? basically is there anything that i should look at and possibly step away from the deal if its not operating as it should. thanks for the help everyone. ive looked through the forums many times over, but its hard to find much information on these older boats.
  3. Hi Everyone! Just bought my first boat. 2001 Wakesetter VLX with about 320 hours. In great shape and runs strong, but I need a couple things and was hoping you could help. 1. Previous owner took the wedge off and lost it. Any tips on buying a wedge? Can't seem to find them online. 2. Does not have a cover. Best cover? Not sure where to start.
  4. Hello community I'm in search of a water flow chart possibly with the installation of a heater and shower line . Or if anyone has add these to any of their boats I'm working on a 96 sunsetter 350 magnum . I know one line has to return to the water pump and one to the sending fitting on the thermostat housing is that correct??

    97 sunsetter vlx

Hello all, I am looking at possibly purchasing my first big boy boat. I gave grown up on the lake and owned multiple boats(outboards/i/o) and skied behind both. I would like to possibly get into surfing, and have been scouring listings for a while now trying to let the perfect fit of my criteria appear, and I think it might have happened. Found a 97 sunsetter vlx with under 400 hours and in my budget, asking 13k I just want some assurance before I pull the trigger too quickly, but in comparison to everything else out there it seems like quite the deal- https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/659529158030356/ Hope to join the Malibu family soon! Thanks for any feedback!
  8. Think i found a boat, going to look at it tonight and test drive it. Only down fall i have seen from the pictures is its missing the center walk through windshield. Any idea were a guy could find one? thanks
  9. I've looked in previous conversations on here and scoured Google with no luck. I need to completely replace the rub rail on my 97 Sunsetter VLX. The issue I'm running into, mine has two short legs on the back that are the same length. All the ones I'm finding have one leg longer than the other. Does anyone know where I can find an OEM style replacement? Thank you!
  10. Looking for suggestions for a fairly painless replacement unit. Prefer thru hull. Thanks.
  11. Looking for some helpful insight from an experienced crowd. I grew up skiing on the SV23 Diamond hull with direct drive. It was an amazing boat for skiing, but we did zero wake-boarding or surfing. I have little experience in either. I am currently looking to get my own boat and am looking at Sunsetters from 97-05. A wide variety in these boats makes me interested in hearing what people have to say. As I grew up skiing, I want to make sure I can still free ski enjoyably. I do not intend on running slalom courses with this boat. So my questions are: 1.Skiing behind the V25 Diamond Hull? I know this would be much better for surfing/wake-boarding/sunset cruises - not sure how it skis. 2.Skiing behind the SV23 Diamond with V-Drive configuration? I know how well the Direct drive skis - looking for insight on how well the V-Drive skis in comparison 3. Surfing behind the SV23 Diamond with V-Drive configuration? I know you can get a wedge and ballast but does it get the job done? Thank you! -Matt
  12. Hi, I have a 1998 Sunsetter VLX. To make what would need to be done to make surf able wave?.
  13. Hi, I just joined the forum to get some advice. I searched for this specific question and couldn't find a thread so I'll ask here. I am shopping for a Sunsetter and found a boat I REALLY like. It's a 1998 LX. I inspected and drove it yesterday. The boat is in fantastic shape with two concerns. 1. When returning to the dock after running at speed for 20 min, i noticed loud ticking at idle. I'm not an expert mechanic but I do know a little and I think its from the valve train. Are these engines known for lifter noise? It's pretty loud. You notice it even with the motor cover down. It wasn't as loud at startup. 2. There is some "trailer rash" on the keel. Otherwise the bottom is flawless. Its to the point where the finished part of the hull has been chipped away and you can see brown underneath but its not deep and I didn't notice any water in the bilge after the test drive. Is this to be expected for a 20 year old boat? Big problem? Are these major red flags? The boat is otherwise good. It has 181 indicated hours which makes me a little concerned about dry bits in the engine. I had a '85 Nautique years ago and liked it. I'm looking at this boat for its skiing wake plus room for a few friends. I'm not really into serious wake boarding. Thanks everyone for giving this some consideration. I took video of the engine ticking but don't know how to post it. I will discuss it with a local dealer as well.

    How to Create Wake?

‘01 Sunsetter 21 LXi. Looking for tips on how to create an ideal wake for surfing. Essentially just a ski boat now.
  15. Just picked up my 1st inboard boat. Got it for $2500 with about 1300 hours on it. It was a trade in at a local dealer that has been sitting since 2017. I was told it was winterized. I figured I would start a thread where I can ask questions as they come up. 1st Question - what motor is it? The motor serial number is - 1C972438, the boat serial number is - MB2W2224D000. It looks like its fuel injected. Indmar Monsoon 325? 2nd Question. The starter is JUNK. I tried hooking the battery right up and bypassed the bendix/solenoid and it was drawing a ton of current. I pulled it out of the boat and it was a solid rusty blob. Where do you guys buy parts for these things. I dont want to end up with some amazon Chinese 3rd question - Looking for a wiring diagram. Thanks in advance.
  16. So my belt broke that connected the alternator. I brought the belt to the part guy and he said the belt that was on there was for a lawnmower 😆😆..we measured the belt..but my question is what is the stock size belt for a 90 malibu sunsetter
  17. Hi everyone, I have a 1998 Malibu Sunsetter. The last two times I've had a few problems. It has bogged down a little bit and haven't been able to get up to speed. As it gets moving, the boat quits and the gauges freeze where they were. The boat won't immediately restart, but after sitting a few minutes, it starts and will run for a little while longer. The last time we took it out, we faced these issues and hung out on the lake for a while, and when we were ready to leave, I tried it one more time and it ran great. Got up to speed no problem. Any thoughts?
  18. I have a 1990 malibu sunsetter. It has a 5.7 mercruiser in it. I am trying to find where the fuel filter is.. I already replaced the fuel\water seperator filter
