  1. I'm in search of a new trailer for my 2000 Response Lx. When I bought the boat 3 years ago, it came on a Mastercraft trailer that was modified to fit my boat and was spray painted to hide all the rust. I can now punch holes through the frame and I need to replace it. I've been looking around and have quoted a Venture and Load Rite trailer. Curious what everyone's opinions are on these two trailers/brands and if I'm missing any other brands I should look into. I'm located in northern Vermont. I'm leaning towards the Venture purely on cost. Venture Trailers: Aluminum single axle bunk trailer VAB-3525 with the following options to accommodate your boat: Alternate Winch stand 3x4x32” height PN 31212 Ski boat crossmember package –(includes alternate crossmember in front and Target Bunks)(to accommodate the inboard) Price: $4,285 Load Rite Model LR-ASKI203600102TB1 Price: $7,500 My boat specs: Length: 20ft Bow eye to transom: 19’ 3” Beam: 90" Draft: 16" Weight: 2,450 lbs Fuel Capacity: 35 Gallons Drive Type: Direct Drive Hull: SV23 Diamond Pictures of the boat and trailer
  2. Hello -- I have a 2012 Malibu Response LX that has started throwing service required on the in-dash display. Boat has been running normally all season until this started. Taking it off the lift the other day, it was pulsing a bit at idle. Otherwise, it seemed okay. Then pulling a skier, the power cut out while taking off. Let it sit for a bit and then it worked fine. Since then (the rest of that night and another day), I continue to see the intermittent behavior. Service required continues to show up regularly even if I clear the screen. Sometimes it pulls fine, sometimes it cuts power pulling a skier out. Twice it has even idled at a much higher RPM than normal. Reading online, it seems like there were a lot of CAT sensor issues around 2008, but not sure if those would apply in a 2012 Response LX. I've certainly never done any work on that part of the boat, so not sure where it to even begin when looking at cat issues. I've tried to gather fault codes. All but one time, there have been 0 codes. Given I've seen service required maybe 30 times, this might not mean anything or be related, but just once I was able to get the following: PPS1 SPN 91 CM 0 DATA VALID BUT BELOW NORMAL RNG FMI 18 OC 13 Any suggestions of where to begin? The nearest dealer is at least an hour and a half away and I'm generally not too afraid to try some fixes myself first before paying a dealer to try things out. Thanks!
  3. I’m looking at buying a 1999 Response LX. I thought it had a ski locker in the rear, but when I opened it up I found the fuel tank staring right at me. It didn’t look like there was much room above it either. My question is, did this model year come like that or is there supposed to be some compartment/cover on top over the tank? It was so high up I don’t think a ski would fit on top with the lid closed anyway. The fuel fill was also in the middle on the back. When I look at photos of a ‘99 Response, it usually shows the fuel fill on the side and the rear lid is a bit bigger. Something’s not making sense to me so I’m hoping those of you more familiar with the model can help properly identify what’s going on or if it’s some other model.
  4. HELP!! We have a slow leak into our bidge (1999 Malibu Response Lx) and cannot, for the life of us, figure out where it is comming from. Water is entering (from somewhere) into the cavity between the bilge and the hull (see images below) I have inspected the hull (after pulling up and off the trailer with our sling hoist) and noticed the water temp sensor cable (as it enters the hull) may have been the issue. I sealed it up but apparently it did not fix the issue. It seems to have slowed it, but still has water coming in. Nothing seems to be comming in through the prop shaft enterance / compartment, rudder box, etc. Center plug and rear plug are tight and sealed. Also confirmed - no water leaks from the engine into the bilge. Is there any other place I am missing where water might be comming into the cavity between the hull and the bilge?
  5. So I picked up a 2009 response Lx last week with 300 hours on it. It had no stereo or speakers from the factory. I have installed speakers in our last couple boats so I was not worried. I found the holes behind the leather in the rear but not the front. Then I realized the speakers are supposed to be dash mounted. I am really conflicted here on what to do. Should i cut in the dash mount speakers? I understand that also requires taking the windshield out. Any ideas or input would be greatly appreciated.
  6. I've had the Response LX for about 5 years. It came with a 4 bladed stainless prop on it, and has the 330HP Mercruiser black scorpion direct drive. The Mercruiser has a rev limiter at 5180 RPM, or thereabouts (it stutters around 5180, maybe it's 5200). We're running pretty hard into the rev limiter, I think we can hit it on about 3/4 throttle. We get 72kph (45mph) at the rev limiter with 1 person aboard, about half fuel, not much spare weight in the boat. It feels like we're giving up quite a bit of top speed there. I've looked at the prop and it doesn't have any clear identifying marks for size. It has J1102 stamped on the side of the hub (where the blade merges in), and arguably it might be O J1102, but not sure why there'd be a gap between the O and the J if it was an OJ prop. So maybe the O is something different. On the end of the hub I can see CUP written clearly, then maybe the edges of some numbers. I'll probably have to take the nut off to see what else it might say on there. We mostly water ski, sometimes wakeboard (we have a wedge), we don't really ballast and the boat isn't big enough to carry a lot of passengers. We have more than enough hole shot - we seem to be able to pull as many tubes as we like (6+ at a time) with no real bogging, and basically nobody who we ski with is happy with full throttle starts. Probably the only use we have for all that hole shot at the moment is beach starts, in which we can idle to the end of the rope and then go (as opposed to the 3 coils of rope we took when I learned to beach start behind a 50HP Evinrude...). Seems pretty clear that we could do with more pitch. I don't have any actual problems with the boat, other than it feels like we could go faster. My brother's boat (when he comes visiting) does about 47mph, and those extra 2mph are annoying. Other than when he visits, I don't notice. I guess I might get a bit more fuel efficiency with more pitch. We like our current wake for slalom, we have an acquaintance with a very similar boat (early 2000s Response LX, Indmar powered I think) with a 3 blade, he reckons our wake is much softer (good thing). I haven't skied behind his boat to compare, he did ski behind ours. I see that the recommended prop would be an ACME 515 or similar, which is a 3 bladed 13 inch diameter, 12 inch pitch, with a little bit of cup. We're at maybe 1000' (300 metres) above sea level, lake use only in New Zealand. I have a lot of questions about 4 blade v's 3 blade. There seems to be a lot of hearsay about 3 blades being more efficient, 4 blades being more balanced, but my reading tells me that's not entirely accurate. Efficiency comes down to surface area, and 3 large blades have similar surface area to 4 small blades. The newer 3 bladed props seem to be pushing into more surface area, so that might not make much difference. Balance is probably comparing an older 4 bladed cast prop to a newer 3 bladed CNC prop, and I suspect there wouldn't be much in it. Wake shape is clearly different for every prop, and would be hard to tell without trying, I do feel like it should be related to surface area somehow, so the newer 3 bladed props might not be all that different to what we have. My options are: 1. Stay as we are. I don't have any actual problems other than a desire to tinker 2. Get my existing prop repitched. Apparently inexpensive and easy enough to do. For some reason that feels like the wrong answer to me, that it would end up with the prop a bit less balanced or it might fatigue the metal 3. Reprop to a 4 bladed newer prop with a bit more pitch. We'd get a bit more top end, perhaps similar wake and hole shot? It seems like you must have to give up some hole shot to get more top end, that's the basics of gearing, so I'm dubious, I think we'd lose a bit of hole shot. But we have plenty anyway 4. Reprop to a 3 bladed newer prop with a bit more pitch. As above, with maybe also some wake compromise? Is there any authoritative information on the impacts, or is this all really black magic and you talk to the prop experts then you try it and see? I guess I might need a spare prop anyway, so I could perhaps just buy a new one and try it. What are people's opinions?
  7. I have a '97 Response LX with the Monsoon engine. Late in the day on Sunday, I had the throttle cable break. The cable core (wire) broke where it is crimped on to the solid leader on the throttle end of the cable. Is this a common failure? Is there any kind of repair that can be done, or do I need to replace the entire cable assembly? Can anyone help with a part number for the cable assembly? I will also need to replace the cable end that attaches to the throttle linkage (the part that threads on the cable and is cotter pinned to the throttle.) Anyone have a part number for that? Thanks so much!
