  1. Hi guys, First post on the Malibu crew page. Have been scrolling around the page digging up whatever information I can find on the Callaway 365 hammerhead. We recently purchased a 1998 Malibu response lx with the hammerhead 365 with 1000hrs on it and the hull. so far what I know about the hammerhead is: -The stock 1998 hammerhead is based on the 5.7L -the Hammerhead had GM fast burn aluminum heads and a different cams then the monsoon 5.7. I assume that this is the 40 horsepower difference between the classic 5.7l and the Hammerhead. What I know about our boat: -Boat has a jasper block allegedly installed at 400 hull hours after the original owner did a poor winterization. All jasper could tell me from the sticker on the block was that it was installed pre 2014. -The owner I purchased it from had had it for 9 years -upgraded it to stargazer -It will eventually need a exhaust manifold as there is a small crack right at where the manifold bends. It drips a very small amount of water when running, will run as is and repair at a later date. -kept the interior in absolutely incredible condition for its age. So my questions to any hammerhead owners are what are you seeing for top speeds and RPM? So far we are happy with the boat but I am not really that impressed with the motor. We have three friends each with responses (1 98 and 2 99s) all have the monsoon and they are basically preforming the exact same to slightly better than the hammerhead. With a acme 449 on the boat we saw 47.8 mph at 5050rpm. I know these boats aren't built for speed, they are tow boats but I was expecting slightly better speeds than the monsoon. I have a 515 on the way and that will be the prop I consistently use. The boat appears to have some sort of vibration that I cant quite figure out, the prop is in perfect shape so maybe I am just not use to the cam of the hammerhead? The boat almost feels slower out of the hole than the monsoon as well? maybe having a fuel supply issue? I plan to change the fuel filter soon and it does still have the hard lines from indmar so it does have a fuel hammering if you back off the throttle rapidly. ANY other items I should watch for on this motor? I know oil consumption has been an issue on these motors but so far no signs of that.
  2. Two days after our last runs for the season, the oil turned white. Water was pouring into the #4 cylinder. Replaced the intake manifold gasket and had same problem. The engine is a 5 year old 5.7l Vortec base engine replacement from Michigan Motorz with only 200 hours on it. It was carbureted. Michigan Motorz is waiting to get a diagnosis from the shop I am using. I do not trust the engine so I am looking to swap the engine to a complete 5.7l MPI Vortec engine from Michigan Motorz. Gives me about 325hp with the torque I am used to. https://www.michiganmotorz.com/5-7l-complete-engine-package-ski-boat-inboard-or-v-drive-replacement-2 . Do not have to swap out transmission. What other options might I consider?
  3. So I have a new 4 channel amp to power the tower speakers in my '98 Response. Speakers seem to be fine (we tested with a home stereo receiver before buying the amp). For whatever reason, it seems the only sound coming from the two tower speakers is bass, and only bass. I am not sure why or how to correct this. Any suggestions? TIA
  4. Curious if anyone knows where to get a "Malibu Response Window Hinge Pin" It is 4.25 " long, 0.2" Diameter, and has two spring loaded detents.
  5. I need help!! My 99 Response is having issues holding consistent speed at 34mph. I am experiencing rpm bursts as I try to hold speed at 34mph. Seems to stay consistent at 32mph and 36mph bit nothing in between. Does anyone have any suggestions? Note - I do not have perfect pass.
  6. Want to put to rest the argument between you and your buddy who's got the faster direct drive? https://www.harbortownemarine.com/listings/malibu-response I've done a lot of digging and haven't found much conclusive information on this one. Would love to hear from someone who knows about this boat. Was this factory?
  7. Hello, We have been trying to diagnose a hard starting LS1. It also has hesitation out of the hole and a lope at idle. Especially when warm. Starts well when cold. Found water on spark plug in cylinder #3. This is a closed system and when I checked the water on the plug, it was lake water. Not Antifreeze. Tested injectors. Swapped coils around. Thought maybe coil wasn't firing at full potential. Put new plugs in. Is it possible for water ti get into cylinder from the exhaust manifold? Seems to me that is the only place you could get lake water in at. Any thoughts and opinions would be appreciated. Thanks
  8. Greetings Everyone, After nearly two years I am hopefully getting a new to me boat. I presently have a deposit on a 2015 Response LXR with the Monsoon 410. My old boat was a 2002 Response LX and I loved the hull for barefooting. The wakes seemed nice a firm with minimal side spray for the boom. I have a few questions: 1.) Is the hull actually the same on my old LX and the LXR? 2.) The LXR has zero off. Can this be set to 42 mph? 3.) Can any LXR owners chime in with their experiences? Thanks Everyone!
  9. I have a 2002 Response with the original cover. Not in too bad of shape but would like to get a new one. This one might leak. Would like to find one that says Malibu on the front and back but seems like all the ones I find say nothing. Any suggestions would be great!
  10. I am new to Malibu and about to buy a 2005 Malibu Response LXI with Corvette LS1 engine. I have not seen many references to the Corvette LS1 engine and am wondering if it is an oddball or called something else. The boat is well kept and looks very clean but is there anything I should be concerned about or have checked before I buy it.
  11. Can anyone tell me if a manual wedge can be added to a 2005 Response LX that was not equipped with one from the factory? Thanks in advance!
