Install fuel pump

Recommended Posts

Having problem installing mechianical Fuel Pump in a 1992 Malibu sunsetter. Has a 350 Magnum Tour ski Mercrusier engine. I took off old pump easy but can't get the new pump installed. Stuck trying to tighten bolts. Is their a technique to mounting pump?

HOWLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

You might be on the high spot on a cam right now or gears are not lined up. Not sure how your pump is driven. Try turning the motor a tad by tapping the key.

If you have a 350 Chevy, you'll have to get the fuel pump push rod all the way up. You can use something like wheel bearing grease to hold it up while you mount the pump up. Just smear some grease on the shaft, then take something like a pair of needle nose pliers to push it back up in the block. It should stay long enough to get the pump under it.

You can use rotate the engine to find the highest point for the push rod. Once it's all the way up the pump will be a breeze to mount.

I have seen people break the push rod or bend the new fuel pump by trying to use the bolts to pull it up while the push rod is down.
