Extreme Not-So Electric Brakes

Recommended Posts

Don't know if anyone else out there fell for the "Electric" brake upgrade from Extreme. What I thought was an electric brake setup turned out un-beknowns to me, electric over hydraulic. I decided to go away from the surge option and went with the electric option as there are a few passes from Colorado to the west. The first trip out to Powell, about an hour into the trip, the trailer brakes were stuck running and fluid was pouring out everywhere. A call to Extreme, useless by the way, revealed no information. I then went to Carlisle, the brake manufacture and within 2 minutes on thier web site found that you needed a special component to allow the brakes to work with most brake controllers.

Upon returning home I worked with Tommy's, where the team did an awesome job of getting me back on the road. Things went well for the rest of last summer. Well this year we took the boat out of storage, made a couple of trips and things worked great. Last week we went to take the boat and my brake controller is telling me there is a short. We have since tried the trailer with 3 seperate vehicles with different brake controllers, verified the wiring connections from the receiver to the trailer controller, and everything looks good.

Another call to Extreme and no help. The next step is to replace the trailer controller a second time. If this dosen't work it will probably cost a grand to swap out the current braking system with a true electric brake system.

Anyone else out there having problems or success with the hydraulic over electric braking system from Extreme / Carslile?

Thanks in advance...

I had a short in mine to. It would pop the turn signal fuse in any vehicle I hooked it up to. Turned out I had to replace the whole wiring harness in the trailer. PITA but extreme was pretty good about sending me a new one and they even payed me to do it. Call Dave in the service department, or just take it to your dealer and have them do it. I didn't want to leave my boat at the dealer so I did it myself.
