Exhaust hose leak

Recommended Posts

Recently had to replace the alternator on my 2000 VLX. Oddly enough, when I put the alternator on, I noticed that the pulley was quite close to the exhaust hose that leads out the back of the boat. However, the pulley was not touching the hose at that time. After one day out I looked over the belt just to be sure that there was no abnormal wear to the belt and that everything was lined up properly. At this time I noticed that the alternator pulley had worn a hole in the exhaust hose, causing the boat to leak water into the engine compartment when setting in the water. Not much of a leak, but enough to worry me a bit. Any suggestions?

If your talking about the silent rider crossover for the exhaust (which I think you are), that would probably be a pretty easy fix I would imagine. It feels like some sort of fiberglass, so I am willing to be a few layers on there and you should be good, maybe even some of that sealing header wrap stuff. Worst case scenario you have to order a new silent rider, which is probably a few hundred bucks.

I had a similar thought when I looked at mine, I ultimately ended up putting new hoses on there to push that tube a little farther back and to replace the pretty worn stock ones as well. I think the new tubing was in the neighborhood of 50 bucks.

Good luck

I don't believe it is the silent rider that is damaged (that would be the muffler right?). I have a small hole in the black rubber hose coming off the bottom of the muffler and heading out the back of the boat. Probably just have to get a new hose and rig it not to be so close to the pulley on the alternator.
