Changing Transmission Fluid

Recommended Posts

Warm the engine, suck out using a vaccuum extractor, refill...One of the more simple services I have done on my Bu. Nothing to it, IMHO.

Only resource you need is a source for the extractor pump.

Hope this helps!

Anyone know of a DIY resource for changing the Transmission fluid on a V-Drive?

Yep, it is pretty much that simple. Go to an automotive store and get an oil extractor, or order one online. Overtons.com or any other marine supply store has them. I recall taking out somewhere between 1.5 and 2 quarts of oil I think. Just put in exactly as much fresh oil as you take out, and check the level. I used regular 30 weight motor oil in my LSV.

Shocking.gif Maybe the v-drive trannies are different? Dontknow.gif Every transmission I've ever seen uses ATF. Yes.gif I believe the V-Drive uses motor oil (BICBW) but the tranny uses Dexron / Mercon ATF (or similar).

Check your manual before going to the store and spending money on something you don't need and I would also check with a local service dept. in your area. I have to do that this weekend sometime I'm at 19 hrs now and haven't done it yet :(

Boy, Michael's on a winning streak here. Jeremyrig, make sure you know which fluid you are changing from which component. . .

I called the local Malibu dealer, it uses a type 3, or DEX3

I am getting ready to change mine also and was wondering about metal shavings. In a car when you change the fluid you have a filter that catches the metal shavings.

How does that work in a boat, is there a magnet somewhere I need to look for like in a differential?

I looked for some yesterday at Kragen and Pep Boys and couldn't find any type III they have type F, VI but no type III. Where did you find it? I might have to go to the dealer or service dept.

If you read your manuals, it calls for pulling the plugs and cleaning the screens on your v-drive. And the tranny, as I recall, also has that requirement (a fliter, however). BUT - when I bought my boat 3 years ago, I spent a lot of time with the serivce manager at my dealer and he admitted that they "never" do anything to either except use an extractor and change the fluid. He told me they had one customer that insisted on them "doing it right", and then the tranny leaked fluid for 3 months until they go it sealed back up - so, I bought an "Oil Boy" (extractor) and suck out the oil/tranny fluid out of the vdrive/transmission annually, refill (takes 15 minutes) and have never looked back.

On mine you take off the two bolts that hold the plate on the bottom of the front of the tranny. Inside you will find that little metal screen. I did it once and swore I would never do it again. It was a B!@#h. On my boat there is no room to get the bolts out or get them back in so I ended up lifting the back of the engine to get at it, then had to go through the whole shaft alignment process again (which I had already done 2 weeks before). After all that there was nothing in the screen. Maybe in another 200 hours I'll do it again. Maybe.

OK, I'll just take this as a lesson learned. The oil looks very clean but I wasn't sure if I really needed to go through all that trouble and if there really is that much metal shavings that need to be cleaned out the first time.
