Adding Perko Switch - Buy 2 new batteries or just 1?

Recommended Posts

I’m thinking about adding a perko switch and adding another battery. Any reason why I should buy two new batteries versus just picking up one more? My current battery seems to work fine but I’ve added a stereo and amp and experienced a less than enthusiastic start the other morning, don’t want to be stranded.

As always, thanks for your thoughts / experiences!

Just my $.02, I don't claim to be an electrical wizard... Just from my experience.

Generally batteries last 4-5 years. But if you've been doing a lot of stereo listening without the engine running...

I'd invest in a jumper box, like they sell at Costco. Its' a battery enclosed with jumper cables on it. May even save you from towing in someone else some day. I've used mine a couple times to jump others, but bring it along just in case.

You may want to look into an isolator. Type 'isolator' into the search engine and you'll see a lot of threads. It'll isolate one battery to be used by the boat for starting. The other would be isolated for items that draw when the engine is off, I.E. Stereo.

A perko you'll have to manually switch back and forth. If you set it to '1' then only one battery will be in use. If you set it to '2' then the boat can pull off both batteries. And I believe this puts them in series.

I actually have an isolator and a perko. I set my perko to '2' whenever I'm running the boat and then switch it to 'off' whenver I put the boat up on the trailer. This makes sure I don't have a slow leak that eats away at my battery.

Good luck.
