Lost propshaft key

Recommended Posts

When launching our boat a few weeks ago, I managed to find a small gravel pile from people power loading last summer. Our lake is down about 8 inches on the winter and I didn't quite clear. I have no idea how those with stern drives are going to be able to launch...

Anyways, when pulling the prop off to take it home for a mild repair, the key dropped in the water and sunk in about 6 inches of silt. I couldn't find it after mucho searching.

So, is that a standard sized key I can get at any hardware store or do I have to call my dealer?

I hunted & hunted around here for a Brass key and never found one. I won't run a stainless key BTW, I want the key to shear & not damage the shaft. There are no inboard dealers locally so I had to go to the next closest inboard dealer which was a MC but he had the key. (My BU dealer is almost 2 hrs. away) I had my dealer mail me a couple for spares and they were here the next day. Now I carry several keys, a couple of cotter pins and a extra nut in my weekend saver kit with my spare prop. It has come in handy several times too.

BTW...the keys are 1/4" X 1.65"
