Question about grounding 2 batteries in series...

Recommended Posts

Crew,

I recently re-wired the batteries (2) in my SSLXi. The original owner installed a Perko switch, but had it improperly wired. I thought I corrected his error, but just saw a diagram that has me questioning the way I re-wired the batteries. Let me see if I can explain this clearly:

Positive cable from engine ---> Common terminal of Perko

Negative cable from engine ---> Battery #1 ground post

Perko "1" ---> Battery #1 positive post

Perko "2" ---> Battery #2 postive post

Battery #1 ground ---> Battery #2 ground

My concern revolves around the last connection noted. Is it okay to tie the two battery grounds together (basically, I took a short cable and connected the ground posts of each battery)? In the diagram I saw, it showed each battery being grounded directly -- and indepently -- to the engine. I did note the text reads that it is common to tie the grounds together the way I did, but I am not clear if that means it is a sound way of wiring it or not. I found that diagram at:

Thanks for any help!

both batteries share a common ground. I doesn't matter if they go together or separate they end up at the same place. the perko separates the batteries on the positive side. wiring grounds together is common , your installation is ok.

Yours is fine as long as the connections are good, clean, and tight.

That is exactly how I have mine wired up. I also took the positive from the accessory panel and put it on the common as well, then the main boat ground and the panel ground to battery 1 ground, then just jumped bat 1--->2 ground like you described.

Works like a champ!

Not to hijack this thread... but I'm curious about the physical location of the second battery. I've been toting an extra battery around for several years in my Response LX without actually installing it but I wonder what may be a good location.
