Fuel Guage Dead

Recommended Posts

In my 4in1 gauge on my 02 RLX the fuel gauge is not working. It just sits on 'E' (Yes I have gas in the boat :) ). When I turn the key on the servo's for the other three guages still vibrate the needles, however the fuel guage does nothing. I have squeezed under the dash and checked all fuses. I have pulled the fuel tank sensor out of the fuel tank to see if the float was stuck or if there was something visibly wrong. No luck. As a final step I have taken a voltage meter and connected it to the wires at the sending unit on the fuel tank. I am not getting any sort of a reading (no power to/from the sending unit). What other things should I be checking?

The only thing I can think is that this is a grounding issue or a problem with the high quality MMC that seems to be a re-occuring issue for many people. Does anyone know if there is another inline fuse somewhere other than under the dash, between the dash and the fuel tank sensor?

Instead of checking for voltage to the sender, you should be checking for continuity with an ohm meter. Disconnect your battery first though. To me it sounds like the gauge went south on you. Power goes through the gauge first, then to the sending unit, then finally back to ground to complete the circuit.

The same gauge went on my RLX last year. I did the same thing you did trying to trace everything down with a volt meter. I used a ohm meter and found that the gauge was bad. Dealer gave me replacement for free. Very easy to install also. Hope this helps.

How exactly did you use the ohm meter? Where did you test? At the fuel sensor or at the dash? Power on or off? Please provide specifics. Thank you all for trying to help!

at the sending you are checking for resistence with the ohm meter. i just did mine in my fish boat last year. if i rememner correctly, it was just the opposite of what I thought it should be. I think it was 0 at full, and something else (i.e. you should see a change, don't remember if it was 15 or 150).
