New Rebuild/Impeller

Recommended Posts

I have just purchased an '87 Skier with a 5.7 liter Mercruser. It had a cracked block when I bought it and the local 'Malibu dealer rebuilt it. I ran it last weekend at varying speeds and never more than 3/4" throttle. It never got hot and has a new thermostat as part of the rebuild...

Question: . Isn't the impeller suppose to be spitting water out of the little hole on the back starboard corner when it is being run?

I am a total novice and have no experience with an inboard motor. I was told it should be constantly spitting water like a outboard. The free advice came from a guy who does not have a boat in his garage but now I'm paranoid.

May I have a nickels worth of free advice?

No, It should not be spitting water like and Outboard with the engine running...I'm not sure, but there is probably a gasket back there that needs replacing. Should not be too expensive and you could probably do it yourself.

Mine will spew a little if I have the hose hooked to it and the engine not running (impeller not spinning) but once I fire it up, all the water should go through the engine. It may be kind of a relief hole.

Have fun with the new boat...

There is no "tell tale" or any other water stream that comes out of an inboard engine. All the water that is sucked up and pumped through the engine for cooling will exit out the exhaust at the back of the boat. If you run the boat on a garden hose in your driveway you will see this, but you won't if it is run in the water. Any other water that is exiting the engine is not right.

You will also see a little water that will come through the drive shaft packing when the boat is in the water and that also is normal.
