Ignition upgrade

Recommended Posts

What parts are needed to upgrade the points style ignition to electronic ignition. I have the 1991 Mercruiser 260 HP ski 350 V-8.

TIA,

Jamie

Its an easy project. Just go to Overtons and buy the kit that fits your engine. Think they cost about $100. Then install the unit in place of the points/condesor plate in your distributor. Well worth it if you are keeping that boat for any period of time.

I ended up replacing my entire ignition system in my 91. Most everything was very tired and corroded looking. A new elec. distrubutor, coil and wires from ebasic power inboard parts for about $250.

Another option would be to pick up a Thundervolt IV Mercruiser ignition. Works great and requires virtually no maintenance. This option is certainly tried and true for marine application. There are several electronic ignition options available from people like MSD, Accel and the like. As posted the Overtons option would work, you might try SkiDim to see what they offer.

Is any brand better that the other (quality or performance)? Pertronix, Accel, MSD????

Thanks for the help!!

No data to support which one is best. The Thundervolt IV from Mercruiser is great, I would recommend that if you can get one. You might try ebay or see if a local dealer has a used one laying around for sale. I run Accel plugs in the boat and they perform better than most. Any system will perform much better than points, points and water just don't mix well.

I am going to order the part today. I am going with the Pertronix ML-181 Ignitor 1 conversion. I found it online for $74 shipped.
