Clanking in V-Drive when engaged in forward drive minimum speed

Recommended Posts

I replaced the plate after hearing some clanking.  Some of it is gone but the V-Drive sounds like it's knocking when first put into gear.  Once it's revved up, it clears up.  Any ideas?

V-drives are usually bulletproof but it could have some internal damage.  In the meantime I'd check the rest of your underwater gear for any slop: prop on tight (and key is properly seated), cutless bearing is tight, and strut is not loose.

I'd say give the rudder a push & pull too while you're down there, but if it was loose I'd think you'd feel it in the steering.
