When to replace the knock sensor?

I noticed some crusty crud on the thread end of the sensor.  Is that normal or impact operation? should I try to chip it off?image.png.38224411a6d23fa1516a6cd35aee4f81.png

I would replace it with a nice shiny new one.

Mine always looked like that and didn't cause me an issue.  If you want peace of mind then replace and save the old for a spare.

You definitely should not chip any of it off. Knock sensors are very sensitive. I think you'd know if it was bad, the engine would run like crap. I know because I forgot to plug it in once after dewinterizing lol.
