Camo GatorStep? Anyone done this and liked the finished product?

Making a final decision on our GatorStep proof. We’re doing one of these options:

black on pearl

or

black on camo (black camo)

It’s a custom design and has the American Flag on the swim step. (Will attach a photo soon of the proof)

We are really struggling with which direction to go. We’re leaning (ever so slightly) to doing black on camo on the interior and black on pearl on the swim step (flag).

Ugh. Decisions decisions…..

Pictures will definitely help...that said my advice is lighter colors unless you're able to swamp the platform using ballast when relaxing.  Anything black and baking in the sun will get warm/hot.  To what degree has many factors, but if it's in the water you can with any colors, but if not I'd personally steer clear of dark colors.

Absolutely. And, I’d say this common logic has me completely thrown. You see, when we went to the folks at GatorStep (we live in the PNW and actually drove to the ‘store’ in Hubbard to talk to the fine folks in person), we talked to them about colors and patterns for a solid 90 minutes. We kept shying away from the darker colors since we already have a fair amount of gray upholstery in the boat that’s the temperature of molten lava in the summer.  We kept leaning toward the lighter gray or even the pearl color as the main color for the flooring.

BUT!!!!

The folks there at the shop were downright ADAMANT that the black color was the coolest color of any of the colors (other than the white/pearl) even when sitting in direct sunlight. I kept giving them the ‘Whatchu-Talkin-Bout-Willis?!’ look every time they said it. I’ve lived through 7th grade physical science…hell, I was even pretty good at it.  I recall my teacher saying ‘White was warmer than black’ exactly ZERO times. So, my lady and I took a few swatches (lots actually) and laid them out in the direct sun for a full day. I dispensed with using my laser temp gauge and opted instead to just slap my paw right down on each of them to get a real sense of what it would feel like. I even took my stinky socks off and put that part of my foot that tends to burn like crazy when I step on hot upholstery.

Guess what….they were totally right!  The black wasn’t even close to as hot as the Sharkfin, the Silver Cloud or even the Red!  It blew my mind. I’m still going to hold out and believe Mr. Jorgensen from physical science for most things in life, but I’m actually willing to buy the black in this case.

adding photos now.

Here are the proofs…

Note that the “Monster” photo is to represent how the “Malibu” will be rendered in a raised 3-dimensional manner with the red outline. The stars laid into the interior will also be raised in the same manner but will not have the red outline.  We were looking to add dimension. They said it wouldn’t be tall enough to create a tripping hazard or discomfort when stepping on it.

So….thoughts?

Well, color me confused, but for sure I had some Sharkfin and it did get warm to the touch, but it wasn't on the swim platform so a portable mister was the solution on hot sunny days.  You're going to be happy no matter what you choose, just post pictures when it's done!

We’re still very torn on whether to go with the camo or pearl.

But I think we’re pretty happy with the custom design!

I really have to say that the folks there at GS are just awesome.

Have you seen the Laser etched option? I didn't like the camo but this gives it kind of another dimension on the main color. Don't know if would work on black. This is 3 color Laser etched Sharkfin, black and electric blue.                                                                                                                                                                       .image.png.114cbf8d84ecc22ad369561dab6e7751.png

I’m asking GS to see if the laser etching is offered on black. If it is, he’ll send along a proof. Though, unfortunately, those renderings just never really tell the complete story. Seeing it live is always different and….a bit of a gamble.

*side note:  don’t think I’ve ever seen a cleaner boat than yours, @dalt1!  Love that color combo.

@dalt1- have you ever felt that the 3 layers has caused any discomfort at all when walking on the flooring?  I considered the 3 layer look, but wonder if it causes a deep enough cutout that you actually feel it on your feet when walking on it. In your experience, is that true at all?

After a year I can say I have never thought of that or felt it as an issue. Nobody in the past year on my boat has ever mentioned that. Guess that makes it a non issue!
