Recommended Posts

Is there a way to tell if the gas is bad before you burn it? Wow be nice to check when I bring it out of storage to confirm it was properly winterized.

Smell it. Crazy.gif When it goes bad it doesn't smell like gasoline anymore...not sure how to describe the smell but it just smells different.

No one is mentioning ethanol. I don't know if it is used all over the country or not, but here in the east were gas is now 10% ethanol, it is creating havoc for boaters do to the fact that is causes phase separation when moisture gets into the fuel tank. It separates into fuel, alcohol, and water. Once that happens, it will not reblend. The number of boats that would not start at the boat ramps this past summer were unbelievable. And they say that Sta-bil will not prevent it. I will see come this spring.

Take a swig. If it tastes like varnish, it's probably bad.

Bingo. If the gas is not drained from the tank, there will be sludge in the spring. Good luck to anyone with this problem.

Ugh, bad gas smells terrible. Gas that's okay smells pretty good by comparison.

Ethanol is the culprit! Our marina is telling everyone to drain their tanks at the end of the season due to ethanol - reverse of the old mantra.
