06 wakesetter 23LSV v-drive fluid question

Recommended Posts

I have a 2006 malibu wakesetter 23LSV with the indmar 8.1 vortec motor. I believe I have the walter vdrive based on the fluid cap saying walter. I changed the oil, and trans fluid. I went to change the vdrive fluid and it looks like it has ATF fluid in it (red). I bought the boat this season and a marina did the service for the previous owner. Should I drain the vdrive and replace it with sae30 or put trans fluid in? I believe the Walter vdrive should have sae30. Any help is appreciated.

I have seen some criminal neglect and abuse done to a Walter and seen them perform like champs. They are pretty much bullet proof IMO. I have read and seen where some owners went the ATF route in them. I would stick with the non-detergent straight 30wt that is called for. The Walter dip stick IIRC is a screw all of the way in to check for the correct level. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. When all else fails read the OM. Good luck.

Mine has the atf sticker on the trans but not the vdrive. Is yours a Walter?

Don’t know off hand.  Check the manuals on the pinned tab
