Response LXI 2006

Just traded up from a Response LX 2001 to a Response LXI 2006 and have been troubled about reading about the bow of the boat taking on water. The only time I heard of this problem was when the new 2007 LXI came out. Is this really a problem or just a reason to buy a new model. No reviews ever mentioned this problem and one of the things that sold me on the boat was the sleek lines in the water.

Also, I noticed that the new reviews of the 2007 LXI do not include performance criteria and wake characteristics. Is this because the 2007 LXI with a different hull and exhaust system does not perform as well as the 2006 RLXI. They say it has a better wake but they dicided not to show compared to other models.

Thanks.

It depends on how you define "problem." I have taken water over the bow a couple of times in my 04 RLXI. It has happened more often when inexperienced people drive the boat. But, no more often than with my prior 92 Ski Nautique. You simply have to be a little more careful than if you had a big V drive.

All things considered, I think you will be very happy with the boat.

How do you plan to use the RLXi mresinc? For my use, I would not consider the low nose a problem...just need to be mindful.

I am primarily a slalom skier and hope my twin boys will find their favorite water activity one day. We needed more space and felt that the open bow was much better for the family.

It's just something to keep in mind for the most part. I've taken a few gallons over the bow probably twice and it was my fault both times because I wasn't being attentive enough.

And besides, the lines with the bow dipping down like that is drop-dead gorgeous, whereas the 2007 RLXi looks more list a wakeboard boat.

The problem is most pronounced when there are people sitting in the bow area. Riding around is not a problem, it is when you turn back through your own wake to retrieve a fallen skier. You just have to give it a little throttle to keep a bow up attitude.

Ya, that and when the gas tank is empty. My suggestion for big water where errant rollers are likely is to keep the tank full and limit the bow area to 200lb.

Nothing to worry about. It's just part of having a beautiful, low slung boat. I'm on a big lake and have a closed bow Sporty that will take water over the windshield on occation. You just got to know what to avoid or how to handle it. You have a nice boat. Don't be too concerned.

The RLXi thinks it's a U-boat if you don't use the throttle correctly. Only takes 1 or 2 good swampings to teach you how to drive the thing though. :)

I appreciate all of the comments.

People sitting in the bow area do block the drivers view a bit.

I have an 05 RLXI. While I typically use it on a small lake, I have had it out on large lakes with heavy waves with no problems at all. I too was a bit concerned after hearing about some of the reports, but it is just not a problem at all. The looks of the 05/06 certainly more than make up any potential of taking on a wave. Congrats on the boat, you will love it.

As some others have suggested here, I don't believe this to be an accurate assesment. The RLXi doesn't think it's a U boat anymore than any CB boat does. The difference is that the stays in the boat, without a bow cover, with an OB. The propensity to dunk the nose is the same with folks in the bow of the RLXi as it was when I loaded up all the stuff for a day on the lake in the nose of my CB '94 MC 190. Bottom line is that with ANY 3 event ski boat the driver needs to pay attention to surroundings to stay dry.

I know that I've got no plans to sell my 03RLXi anytime soon....

Don't know about the MC, but the difference in risk of dunking the front of a Rlx and a pre 07 Rlxi is huge.

As others have mentioned, it's usually avoidable (has only happened once to my Rxli), but when it does happen, it sucks a fat one.

The benifit of the OB is that the water goes on the floor and front seats, and not over the windshield on the dash and passengers.

My lake blows up at times where you can't slow down in rough water or you'll get swamped. No big deal, just part of the territory.

Does anyone have a comment on why no performance data or wake characteristics have been released for the new Response LXI 2007.

Released by whom? Are you thinking of the WSM BBG? They have published less and less objective AND subjective data over the last several years. As for forums such as this, not sure there are too many people out there who have actually skied behind the boat that would pony up the info.

The only publication I have seen anything info is waterskimag and one of the things that impressed me about malibu boats was how effecient the diamond hulls were compared to other models. It always seemed that they ran faster and had better wakes than the top three.

Water Ski Mag Boat Buyers' Guide has gone down hill for ten years now with regard to providing objective/subjective independent data. This year they hit absolute bottom with the 'Guide' being nothing more than a compilation of manufacturers' mini-brochures.

Here are some excerpts from Boating Mag, December issue, 'The Specialists' by Jeff Hemmel:

---------------------RPM------MPH-----GPH-----MPG-----Sound dB

Response LXi ----3500-----35.4-----10.8----3.3--------82

Outback ----------3500-----33.1-----10.8----3.1--------91

ProStar 197 ------3500-----35.2-----11.6----3.0--------89

Tige 20i -----------3500-----34.3-----10.4----2.9--------88

----------------------WOT-----MPH-----GPH-----MPG------Sound dB

Response LXi-------4900----45.5----23.9-----1.9--------91

Outback ------------5200----45.3----25.1-----1.8--------96

ProStar 197 -------4900-----45.1----23.2-----1.9--------90

Tige 20i ------------4800------44.0----21.2----2.1--------99

Wake as described by one skier:

Response LXi--small and soft with no significant bump at shorter line lengths.

Outback--wake was small but a bit harder than the Malibu and MC.

ProStar 197--the wake was small but just a touch harder than the Malibu.

Tige 20i--the wake was slightly larger than the other boats but exceptionally soft.

Hope the above proves interesting to someone. It was a PITA to make the info line up. :)

Great info Jack and I don't mean to dispute you or your source of info but my experience tells me that the 197 uses gas about twice the rate the RLXi does. And I've never seen a 197 get close to 45mph. If you puruse the MC site you will find a majority of owners there asking how they can coax a bit more speed out of their impressive boats because they want to GET TO 45MPH. Lastly, the MC is much more quiet to my ears than the data above suggests.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the info Jack. Do you have a link to the info. It is interesting that the performance has gone down from the 2006 RLXI model by 2 mph on the top end. Maybe that why they did not want to show the performance figures in waterski mag.
