Prop spinning in neutral?!

Recommended Posts

Just fired my boat up out of storage and my son told me the prop was spinning. It was going real slow (too big of a file size to add here). Any idea of what’s going on?

Thanks, Phil

Normal. I bet if you rev the engine it'll spin faster.

Thanks! I’ve never noticed it before but usually only have boat running out of the water when I pull it out of storage and before I change oil at the end of the year.

Over time, as the transmission begins to wear, the clutch material in the transmission can cause the steels and plates to drag a bit.  If the transmission gets overheated the plates can actually warp and drag even more.  Check the transmission fluid level and make sure it is not low or overfull.  It is still pretty normal for the prop to spin a bit in neutral when running the boat out of the water, especially after the cutlass bearings get a bit worn.
