Cap wrench for Mobil-1 302a filter

Recommended Posts

Anyone know how to figure out what size cap wrench fits a Mobil-1 302a filter? I’ve got one stuck tight on my Malibu Sunsetter Lxi :-(

Thanks, guys. I tried the jaw-style wrench to no avail. By the time o get the jaws snug I’m out of room. Too much finagling to try them with a socket and cheater bar. Just not enough room.

A cup wrench is my last hope for an easy solution since it goes on to my breaker bar already snug.

I had the same razor idea, but there seems to be a lip or recess behind which the gasket seals to the block. Very strange design.

The guy who snugged it on too tightly in the first place owns his mistake, but getting him here to do what I can do myself seems like more effort than it’s worth. If a cup wrench doesn’t do it though, he’ll be getting a phone call.

In extreme cases I have used a pneumatic chisel on the steel lip near the seal to turn the filter, but it is not the sort of thing most people have just lying around and you need to be very careful using it.

Maybe, try using a vice grip style filter wrench and a hammer.  Grip as close to the top of the filter as possible.  I got that to work, also.

I had no idea these existed. Harbor Freight have them in stock for $10. I will go after work. Thanks!
