Fuel issues on wakesetter xti

Recommended Posts

I have a 2004 Malibu wakesetter xti. We took it out for the first day on the lake and everything was going well for about 20 minutes. When we got to the other side of the lake the boat just died instantly at speed. We originally thought it was a spark issue but we confirmed spark was fine. We did replace the ignition coil first. After replacing the ignition coil the boat started for a minute and then died. We hear the fuel pump kick on. We removed the tube to the fuel filter and turned the ignition but we didn’t see any fuel come out of the tube into a jar. We are trying to get to the fuel pump but can’t figure out how to remove the seats or get to the pump. Any suggestions?

details, we need details

how did you verify spark ?

have you checked the fuel pressure ?

What do you mean by “the tube to the fuel filter?”

Thank you for responding.

how did you verify spark ? We grounded out the spark plug and also used a tester.

have you checked the fuel pressure ? No.

What do you mean by “the tube to the fuel filter?” We didn't realize the fuel pump was attached to the motor. You can disregard this bit. We found the fuel pump

If the fuel pump has gone, any idea on a part number?

They stopped making those fuel pumps a while ago for some reason, but bakes has a replacement kit. There are guys on here that have made their own kits, but if you're in a pinch... this one has all the parts. You can probably find a less expensive kit with a google search.

that is a deal, even without considering the lifetime warranty.  I have a spare but may need a second spare. LOL

Right!?! I haven't searched for a pump for a very long time and was really surprised. Looks like the aftermarket guys finally caught up.

I would not go out and start buying parts until you diagnose what is wrong.  You really should test the pressure first.  You should have 42-44 PSI at key on, idle, and wide open throttle.

Testing the fuel pressure on a 2004 is a bit pesky since the Schrader valve sits directly under the flange of the intake plenum cover.  You can adapt a latching tire chuck to your pressure gauge, but most people remove the plenum cover and cut the flange away so they can use their pressure gauge threaded onto the valve.  The cover is easy enough to remove and replace, and the gasket is reusable.
