No forward gear.

Recommended Posts

Today we were on the water, my blower hose somehow got wrapped up in the drivshaft. It had the stainless steel wire wrapped all up around the back of my transmission. It looks as if the wire may have damaged a seal. The boat was running perfectly before this then it was no Bueno, I had no forward propulsion. It would go in reverse but not great. There was a ton of fluid in my bow. Anyone have any idea of where to start looking for my problem?

Drives are very susceptible to low fluid.
They use pressure from the front pump when the engine is running to pressurize the Forward and Reverse Circuit.
There a stack of clutches and plates (alternating). When you select a gear fluid is directed to the appropriate clutch pack. And that "gear" is engaged.
If the fluid level is low the clutch pack won't have enough holding power and the clutches will slip and burn up.

Not sure, but being a 1990, it might be a Velvet Drive 10-17. They're REALLY easy to work on if you have some mechanical aptitude and follow the manual.
Even if it's some variation of that drive, direct drives are not that complicated.

You might be able to just remove the prop shaft coupler from the output of the drive and change it in the boat.
There's a big nut that holes the flange to the output shaft of the drive, that'll be the hardest part of this repair. But doable.
It will have a specific torque for reinstallation that you will have to get right. Just a heads up.

i second fluids. top it up and find the source of the leak first.

-maybe the wire just punctured one the hoses, you can replace it standard hydraulic lines.
-if its coming out from the output shaft seal (just before the flange), you could replace that without taking the trans out of the boat. if i remember correctly, martin archer did the reapir that way.
-if it is at the heat exchanger and you wouldnt even need the drive rebuild kit in that case
-the o-ring on the shift lever/regulator could have gone

woodski also suggests using hydraulic fluid, Mobil 423 or 424 instead of ATF. i havent tried myself. dont mix.

ideally you want to avoid pulling out the velvet drive. getting everything to align properly with old engine mounts is a PITA.
