Oil Filter Leak

Recommended Posts

Curious if anyone else's oil filter leaks like this in my photo,  Oil leaks drive me nuts.  I always lubricate the oil filter gasket with oil before screwing on.  I also screw on hand tight more than all my other vehicles.  IMG_0551.thumb.jpeg.aa0e29589344707a5fe65fffbaf62736.jpegIMG_0552.thumb.jpeg.64aa5b7768de15e18ece5a19582e4742.jpeg

I suppose you have already checked that a previous filter gasket isn't still there?  Also note the pink dots - has the filter housing been changed? Leaking enough to rundown the side of the filter??

The filter housing has not been changed.  No there is not a stuck on extra gasket.  Yes it will eventually run down the sides of the filter making it slippery to remove when necessary.  Not enough oil leak to make a difference on the dipstick between seasons.

I had a van that never leaked oil until I used synthetic, then it dripped from the  housing above the filter.  I finally got tired of it and pulled the housing.  A tiny hunk of crud had gotten on the sealing face and made a dent in the o-ring.  I cleaned the crud and put a new o-ring on it and never had another leak.
