2013 24 MXZ vDrive sounds rough

1st spring outing on the boat and transmission sounded rough.  a slight rattle going in and out of gear and a louder rough noise coming when under power.  

Dealer came out and said trans fluid smelled burned, topped off the fluid which they said was low and suggested I replace the vDrive.  $5200 and no ETA on the part.  

would love any advice so i don't lose a season here.  Thx!

Transmission or V drive? I would start simple first. Check the shaft coupler bolts for the VD and prop shaft coupler. They are known to get loose and cause a loud clunking noise. Second replace the fluid in both the trans and VD paying particular attention for suspended particles. A magnetic will help for this. If you see sparkles, you can pretty much confirm an issue. Thx WDR, i guess i'm not smart enough to know if its the vdrive or trans but will pay closer attention on the next check ride.  Appreciate the guidance!
