Transmission/engine mount bushing replace.

Recommended Posts

Just finished up this “quick” project.   Noticed the transmission mount bushings were worn doing an oil change.    Went out Sunday and watched for movement under load.  WOW.  Whole unit moved at least an inch up on the port side.   That can’t be good on the prop shaft or anything else.     Called it quits and went home.    Gathered up the wrenches and tore into it.    Wasn’t too bad.   Swapped out the bushings.   Obviously required a shaft alignment.   The strut was bent a bit so had to straiten that out.  Will head out tomorrow and give it a test run.    Definitely something to look out for.    My boat has 750 hours on it.

Hello, I just posted on removing my engine and how to remove the transmission bracket. My bushings look ok but may replace them while everything is out.

Questions:

1. Did you take the mounts loose from the stringer? If so, are there nuts on the back side of the stringer that you can access?

2. Haven't found a service manual. How did you re-align the drive shaft?

3. Where did you get the bushings?

I did the mounts one at a time so one side held it up.   Can run the opposite side up a bit to help lift the drive. I did not remove the mounts from the stringers.   It was a bit of a PITA but manageable.     After I eyeballed the placement I did a complete shaft alignment.   My strut was bent a bit so I had to deal with that.   Going to do another alignment this spring.

To answer the question regarding removing the motor mounts the answer is YES there are nuts inside the stringer that you access by removing the vented covers on the sides of the stringers.  4 per mount. Careful not to drop the nuts or the washers when they come loose!

So the LSV engine and trans mounts have a rubber biscuit setup which appears to allow some flex or movement?  I assume there is a somewhat flexible shaft seal to compliment the setup?  Curious from a DD owner as DD's are solid mounted.
