Front Ballast tank leaking when bow is high

Recommended Posts

Hello Crew. My front ballast tank in my 2015 23LSV leaks from 100% to 75% then to 50% in about 30min of surfing activity where the bow is elevated. It holds 100% fine when bow is level. Any thoughts on the cause of this?

Hey I have those too on my 09 VTX. Found both of them leaking. The little duck bill in those caps I believe wears and then allows water out. Not sure if it’s a big enough leak to explain your problem. Ordered new ones from Bakes. Just type duckbill or anti syphon caps into the search an you’ll find them. They shouldn’t leak water out, just allow air in.

Hey just brainstorming your issue. Sitting in an Irish bar in Rochester, MN by myself looking important but really not. Daydreaming of being on my boat. If yours is anything like mine those anti syphon valves on the forward engine compartment firewall are for the aft ballast tanks. The center and forward ballast tank anti syphon valves are in the small compartment on the floor just to the left of the helm. Those on mine are inline valves. Maybe someone else with more knowledge can chime in since I’m fairly new to Malibu’s as well. Does the fill pump have a back flow valve or not? For you where does the water go that was in your tank. Is it in the hull or do you think it’s sucked overboard? If it’s in the hull I’d say you have a leak, if the hull is mostly dry I’d say it’s being sucked overboard.

I don’t really know. The only thing I can tell is that the Auto bilge pump function comes on when surfing so I suspect the front tank is leaking into the boat when bow is up and activating the auto bilge but it’s just a guess. Marina diagnosed it as a faulty in-line check valve on the front hard tank.  $33 part to fix. Does this make sense?

Yup could be the culprit especially since your bilge is running frequently during surfing. The water in the hull runs to the back while underway and kicks on the pump. It’s either leaking from the hose fittings or possibly a cracked housing. Only 33 bucks and a little labor I’d change it and see if the problem is solved. They are plastic so highly probable it froze over the winter if it wasn’t winterized correctly and cracked.
