‘12 Txi surging

I’ve had an issue this summer with my Response Txi engine surging. It’s most noticeable at 7-8mph when still warming up, but is audibly noticeable even at ski speeds when warm.
I did a complete tune up, but no joy.

I was talking with former ‘bu owner who suggested disconnecting the MaliCruise. Does anyone know how to do that? I assume it’s not at the display module.

If you have the LCD info center display (and not the Malivue video screen) on the dash then the mini MMDC gauge controller sends information from the CAN BUS and analog inputs to the gauges and to the info center display.  You may be able to just unplug the info center, but I can imagine why it would have any direct affect on engine surging.  Just turning the cruise off on the info display should do the same as unplugging it.  Does the throttle only surge when the cruise is turned on or also when it is turned off?

Throttle surging would more likely be caused by unstable fuel pressure or poor fuel condition, an engine ignition system issue, loose or corroded electrical connections, faulty throttle lever or throttle body components, or even a vacuum leak or mechanical issue.

I would start with the easy stuff like battery, starter, ground, and main harness plug connections.  Next would be checking the ignition components, fuel pressure and fuel condition.  Also, check if there are any diagnostic fault codes that could point you to a problematic sensor or circuit.

Great input. No fault codes. I recently had the dealer do a full tune up, which included fuel filter replacement. I’ll check fuel like pressure.

I have disconnected and inspected all connectors under the dash. I will do the same in the engine compartment.

The battery and alternator are both new. Not sure why the starter would be in play…

im not sure how to check throttle lever or body components. Any additional info here?

Not so much the starter itself as the battery cable connections at the starter.  That is where the engine harness gets its power.  The block ground connections from the battery cable and the bellhousing stud connections are also important.  They should all be clean and tight.  Check the main 16 pin engine harness connector, too.

I was skiing with a buddy who has a ‘12 Txi as well. He recommended replacing the battery. I had mine tested and it was “borderline”, so I bought a new one.

problem went away!

Funny thing, I almost suggested this - Sorry. I didn't because I was having another really weird engine symptom but wasn't the same, every so often it would crank for a very long time. Got a new battery and poof, problem gone.
