1995 Response issue with restart

So when we start the boat up and run it for a few hours it gets "hot" (haven't verified if its overheating) and then after we turn the boat off when its warmed up or hot it won't restart until it cools off again. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Sounds like there is less than optimal water flow.  Causes include:  debris in the water circuit, inlet of transmission cooler a prime spot; old or damaged impeller, corroded thermostat, or even an air leak in the water plumbing on the inlet side.

a faulty ECT (engine coolant temperature) sensor/connector/wiring.

In the case of a bad temp sensor, you should be able to smell the extra fuel while it is cranking if you don't have COVID.  It does this because it thinks the engine is very cold and needs extra fuel (the same as a choke would do on a carb).  A reasonable way to check to see if it is too much fuel is to pull the neutral button and move the throttle to wide open and then try to crank it again.

@KishinosResponse96, you didn't tell us whether this is a carb or injected engine, and if injected, whether it is throttle body or multi-port.  All of the replies so far refer to an injected engine.  Please tell us more information.

This one is carbed! Thanks

Could you explain how it doesn't restart?  If it is "coughing" or "sputtering" during the start then that sounds like classic vapor lock.

It will cough or come to life a bit before dying off.

Ignore all of the talk of bags of ice and key up three times since you have a carburetor instead of injectors.

How long since the carburetor was rebuilt?  It sounds like maybe a leak is causing it to drip fuel, which would make it hard to start when warm.  Did you try cranking it with the throttle wide open?

Replaced carb last year didn’t solve the issue

No, What does that help accomplished? and to be clear that is full throttle?

If your carb is dumping extra fuel, the engine can use the extra air to get the mixture correct.  WOT cranking is standard procedure for a flooded engine.

If the engine will start with WOT, it helps tell us that you probably have too much fuel.  I explained that in my first post....
