Hit a flat rock I need to replace my prop but what about the fins/rudder?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys rough day on the lake…

I was in a new lake and I didn't know that you had to hug the shore going out in order to miss a big flat rock. That being said I tagged that flat rock luckily while going slow 5mph. I bent the hell out of the prop while also dinging the fins and nicking the rudder. First off I’m planning on getting two new props so that one can be a spare on the boat. I’m thinking of getting a 2419 and a 2247 both recommended by wakemakers for my 06 8.1 247. Does this sound like a good plan ?

I've attached pictures of my rudder and my fins. The rudder only has a small nick in the front bottom corner. Can I file this down or would you guys suggest buying a whole new rudder assembly($1,300)?

The front fin (first two of the fin pictures) got tagged worse then the rear one. I was planning on replacing both of them unless you guys say that I can file these down or have another idea. What are your thoughts on these and are they easy to replace?

Thanks again for your help, still had fun on the lake even though we could only jump in and swim!

I would dress up the fins and rudder with a file or a grinder with a sanding disc on it. I would check the bolts on all of them

to make sure they are tight. Check the rudder bushing for excessive play. And most importantly check the prop shaft with

a dial indicator to make sure it’s straight

Make sure that the entire rudder is not bent back as well.  That looks like a pretty slight impact, bit it is a long lever arm on the shaft that goes through the hull.

Also, no need to buy 2 new props.  There is a 99% + chance that your existing prop can be repaired to like new condition for less than $200.  I take mine to a local place, but I believe that there are mail in services available as well.

Thank you guys so much, so happy that it wasn’t worse!!

I already got the prop replaced. Unfortunately the old one couldn’t be saved because of a gauge out of it.

I have a few more questions. I am going to grind down the fins but if I decide to replace them how big of a job is it?

Also how do I check the rudder bushing for play and how do I check if the rudder is bent?

If I can’t get her into a shop to check if the prop is bent how bad is it if she’s running well to just run it for the next month and a half and get it taken care in the fall?

 Thanks again for the help!!!

No idea in the fin replacement, but that seems unnecessary.

look at the rudder from the side as someone else is turning the wheel back and forth.  You will know if the pin is bent.  As for the bushing, just grab the rudder and try to rock it back and forth.  It should have very little play.

i wouldn’t worry about running it unless you have noticeable vibration.  Every issue that I have ever had with a prop strike is immediacy noticeable with vibration u til the problems are fixed.  Once the new prop is on take it out for a spin.

Finally, post a picture of the prop. Who told you that it could not be repaired, the guy who sold you the new one?  I would be really surprised if it can’t be fixed.  It is always a good idea to have a spare.

I would recommend checking your strut and the fiberglass where it mounts to the hull.  I expect you will find the strut is bent and there is cracking in the fiberglass around it.  Also, check the run out of the propshaft.  A quick easy way is to tell if it is bent badly is to run the engine, shift into forward or reverse gear and see if there is a noticeable wobble at the end of the shaft.  If you can see it wobble, it is way out of specification and will need repair or replacement.  Check and adjust the engine alignment after the repairs are done.
