Temp 166’ish

Recommended Posts

When should I start to think about impeller replacement.  Boat is getting up to about 166 (167) when surfing.  2017 21 VLX with monsoon 6.2L 410.

The engine temp is slowly rising likely because the lake temp is rising, not due to the impeller wearing out. When your impeller needs replaced due to failure…. You’ll know. I change mine every two years or so just to be safe. Seems everyone is different in their timelines.

I seriously doubt that this is the reason, but I agree with the rest of your statement.  A prophylactic change of impellers sure beats waiting until you cook your engine when it fails.

Engine temperature is controlled by the thermostat, and provided you have enough flow from the raw water pump you should stay really close to 160*F.  A more likely explanation is that the OP is running the engine under heavy load for an extended period, and that 166*F is as close as the cooling system can keep it.  A new thermostat and possibly a block flush might help, as would simply making sure that the pickup / sea strainer / transmission cooler isn't blocked by debris.

Although the impellers in the Raptor 410 last as they should for many hours, if they do fail, removing the shards is not easy! Replace it every year so you never shred one in these motors.
