1991 Malibu skier

Recommended Posts

Anybody out there know about these older Malibu Looking for a place to start I have a 1991 Malibu skier with a 351 engine 460 hours runs great but just takes a while to get started. On my last trip to the lake I put in water started right up from cold idled for about 10 minutes then died got it to start again about ten minutes later after cranking on the ignition quite a few times I’ve been looking for a maintenance manual but no luck. Anyone got any ideas

Assuming you have a carburetor version and not fuel injection, your carb probably needs a good bath and rebuild.  It is quite possible that your choke is sticking, the acceleration pumps are weak, the floats are not set correctly, and the jets are full of crud.  A rebuild kit is cheap enough, and it is not terribly hard to do it yourself.

Other than that, a full tune-up is not out of the question, including plug wires.

You’re confident it’s a 351?  My 91 skier had a GM 5.7 Mercruiser.  I could provide the manual if you had that engine.

That’s what the guy I bought from told me it was. is there a certain way to tell what should I look for?

Is the distributor in the front of the carburetor or behind it?

Chevy is better 🙂.  But seriously they’re supposedly less cold blooded in those years.  Just sold my 91 and the engine manual went with it, but I have an electronic one on my phone I’ll try to upload in a bit or provide a link.

I’ve always used the Mercruiser service manual #17.  Post a picture of yours and maybe we can tell if it’s a merc.  Probably doesn’t matter too much if it’s GM.
