Loss of power under surf load

Recommended Posts

I have a 2013 VTX. The boat lost pulling power when pulling a surfer, almost like the transmission was slipping. The engine was still running, and went back into idle after pulling  it out of gear. I drained the sacs and bright the boat up to ski speed ~35-36 mph, and everything seemed to be ok. We filled the sacs back up and surfed for another 10 minutes or so before it did it again. Transmission and vdrive fluid were within operating level, and looked clean on the dipstick. No warnings on the dash. Has anyone else experienced this?

I had something weird but different happen while surfing last weekend. We were up to speed and surfing for a while. All of a sudden the rpms and speed cut out and then surged. I almost wonder for mine if my prop was slipping or cavitating in the water causing the issue. Could yours be a similar issue?

That was my initial thought was that I either grounded out and had a cavitation issue, or busted my key on my shaft/prop. After inspecting the prop and everything else it seemed to be fine, then it happened again. My wife was pulling me, and said she thought she heard grinding an instance before, and either smelled something burning, or very hot. It happened so fast, I am not sure if the RPMs shot up of if it completely cut the power, it definitely cut speed.
