stringer separation on 2013 MXZ

Recommended Posts

We are the 2nd owner of a 2013 Wakesetter MXZ. Had 150 hours when purchased 1 1/2 years ago and only used only one season (a few times) in AR. When summerizing and putting back on the water a few months ago, the tech said water was coming in and he had to take it back to shop, the same shop who winterized it. Long story, but after having it dismantled by hull expert in OK, stringers have both separated/delaminated, multiple hairline fractures everywhere, this tech said Malibu inferior layer failed, was definitely a structural/manufacturer issue. We, being first time owners, did not know about transfer of warranty, but can prove we are second owners. Tech is trying to help us with Malibu, nut to no avail, yet. The Malibu dealer that did the servicing in Rogers, AR has not been advocating for us with Malibu and not very responsive through out this whole ordeal. Any input or thoughts would be appreciated. Shouldn't a lifetime hull warranty be for a lifetime regardless of a piece of paper transferring ownership> Not really a lifetime warranty then...just sayin'...

According to the 2013 owner's manual the warranty can only be transferred to a second owner if they purchase the boat within 3 years of the original purchase date, have a warranty transfer inspection done and pay the transfer fee within 10 days of purchase.  If you haven't done any of those things I can't imagine why you would expect the repairs to be done by Malibu at no charge.

What is the definition of a LifeTime Warranty? Why the unrealistic parameters or time frames? Saying they have a lifetime warranty is a total joke. Both the forensic expert and the fiberglass specialist have stated that Malibu built a lemon here...couldn't believe the things they did when factory installing the stringers or the cheap materials they used on this model, the numerous holes in the stringers, etc, etc... Absolutely a manufacturing failure! We don't 'expect' anything from Malibu, but would have liked to think that once it was proven to them to be manufacturing failure, they would have stepped up...but No, they suck because they don't stand behind their product, just their poor excuse of a so called warranty...

Did you have the boat inspected by a Malibu dealer before you bought it?  If not, did you have any marine inspection done prior to purchase?  I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but if you didn't do your due diligence prior to the transaction, this is unfortunately your cross to bear.  Saying Malibu sucks and doesn't stand by their product is a false statement.  I've had my share of issues with QA/QC on my boats, not the least of which being my '21.  Regardless, Malibu stepped up and assisted me in getting things taken care of.  All boats I purchased used prior to ordering one last year I had inspected prior to finalizing the transaction.  It was worth the few hundred bucks to me to know I wouldn't be in the position you find yourself in.

EVERY boat manufacturer requires the warranty to be transferred and they have limitations.

You should have researched the warranty on the boat as well as had it inspected prior to purchase.

For all you know the previous owner KO'd the bottom of it and it got a quickie repair job.

Sorry for your luck here, but buyer beware, always.

Researching a major purchase is important to some people, but not to everyone.

Maybe you should take up knitting or stamp collecting instead of owning a boat, if you think you can handle that.
