Loosing coolant but no leaks?

Recommended Posts

So I am definitely loosing coolant. Not dramatic amounts, but maybe a 1/4 gallon over two 4-5 hour sessions. No visible leaks, no coolant in bilge, no coolant smell when running whatsoever. I also did the exhaust gas in coolant test to see if maybe a head gasket had gone bad but it all comes up clean. The only thing I can think of is the heat exchanger. Any tips on how to test it?

Thanks!

The best way to test the exchanger would be to use pressure on the engine side to see if it leaks down.  Or you could pull the end caps and replace the rubber seals and see if the problem stops.  What engine and year are we talking about?

Odds are high you have a hose connection that is loose and leaking very slow. I would dry everything off and run it 5 minutes and look again at all hose connections with a flash light. Then I would try it with the UV dye they sell to find leaks. Then I would compression test and leak down test the motor to check your head gasket integrity.
