Play in steering column... help

Recommended Posts

I bought this boat last year, and the steering column has wiggle/play to it.. not sure what it is, or where to start. See video, and let me know what you think it is.

See video/gif

Video isn't showing up, but I'd take a look at the following:

  • Slop in rudder shaft packing
  • Slop in rudder cable-to-tiller connection
  • Loose bolts (4) at rack & pinion assembly under helm
  • Slop in tilt assembly, if applicable (this one is tricky)

The video shows up for me.  It's one of these two.  Dive under the dash and make another video from behind as you jiggle the wheel again.

Ahh, my innerwebs is SLOW here at the hotel...anyway, there are 2 large(r) bolts that attach the tilt assembly to the hull, so look at those for tightness, but tilt wear might be the culprit.  I was able to tighten mine up a bit, but it only does so much.

Middle left, you'll see the mounting flange and the 2 large bolt that go through.  If they are tight then it may be wear in the tilt mechanism.  I was able to tighten it up and lube the universal joint, but it's a puzzle to get back together.  If you over-tighten it, then it binds slightly.
