Throttle/Gear issue

Recommended Posts

I have an 05 LXi response just upholstered. Got it back and throttle is overly responsive while the drive link isn't engaging. Initially it started straight to full throttle, was able to adjust to decent if not a little high idle, but cannot get back to regular setting. Where to go from here ?

Thanks

welcome to the crew.

if "drive link isn't engaging" is equivalent to "won't go into gear" then i think the shift lever at the transmission is loose on its shaft.

if the lever is loose it can allow a start at wot (ask me how i know).

Do you know which shifter you have?  If it's the MV-3 then I'd definitely take a look at the cable ends and then readjust as necessary.  You may have one that has failed after having been handled if that portion of the interior was worked on.  This was mine a few years ago with ~800 hours on her.

Also, if the shifting mechanism was removed then perhaps they reinstalled the cables in the wrong holes, e.g. swapped the cables, because if it is literally "full throttle" then that would sound like the throttle is hooked to the shift portion and the trans is hooked to the throttle portion.  I'm not sure if it's even possible to do, but that's how the mechanism works: shift cable goes full throw immediately with small lever movement, throttle cable goes linearly with lever movement.

In fact, you could easily check this by having someone move the throttle while you watch the throttle and shifter assembly.
