Steering cables

Recommended Posts

I have a 1994 Malibu flight craft. I have a Lotta play in the steering wheel, the steering wheel is easy to turn but I have almost 1/ quarter play each way before the rudder turns would this be the cables? And also has anybody turned one of these old steering system into rack and Pinion steering?

Make sure the cable nuts are tight at each end to make sure that the cable isn't floating back and forth as you steer.  Try moving the motor back and forth (I'm assuming we are talking about an outboard) and check for play in the system as you move it.

You should be easily able to convert to a rack system if you have enough room under the dash to fit the rack.  Nothing wrong with a rotary helm, though.
