No Power to Stereo / RFX-MR5BB Head Unit

Not receiving any power to the Head Unit, thought the head unit went bad due to delaminating  (boat is a 2013 22 MXZ). Replaced head unit and still no power.  The boat has fuses and circuit breakers.  All the circuit breakers have been reset.  Not sure if I missed the fuse that operates the stereo (non are labeled stereo), check connections to black box(s).  Could the punch amp have failed?

Thank you!

Where have you tested for power?

you want to test yellow and red wires going into the black box first. The unit in your dash is a glorified remote, the black box is the brains of the operation and the right place to test for power.

do you have a transom or secondary interior remote?  Sometimes, a fault remote can also cause weird issues. If you do, I’d disconnect each remote and try to get it to power on with the other to isolate that issue.

The amp could also fail, but need to work down the list on troubleshooting before you assume this. Amp is easy to test. Connect 12v power input to remote input with a small jumper, and provide source direct with rca’s from a good known source. I’ve tested with rca’s direct from a phone or iPod, or even from a home stereo.

I presume you mean the unit will not come on, or have you actually tested the Ground, constant B+ and switched IGN circuits at the black box, and one of those circuits is no good?

Thanks for the suggestions - i'll need to get some electrical testing equipment.  I did check the fuse from the battery to the black boxes and it looked fine.

Thank you!

  • 2 years later...

Had my 12’ VTX in for windshield repair and the head unit got unplugged, had to get under the dash to hook it back up, follow the black wire coming out of the head unit to the connection and check to make sure you have a solid connection. It’s a small 6 prong looking connection. Hopefully this helps someone out.

I had this happen to my lsv last year, the remote wire for some reason was toast, I took it to an audio shop and they figured it out, but yes it was literally out with no power period at all really weird.

Hope you find it’s just a bad wire or fuse somewhere. Mine was doing this and the black box ended up being faulty. Had to replace it. Good luck. Not the same without some tunes playing on the lake.
