Surf band function with aftermarket stereo?

Does the surf band work the same with aftermarket stereos? Someone mentioned its different.

Just curious, thanks for any info.

You have to leave the black box in place and basically piggyback an aftermarket stereo/receiver... 

I dove pretty deep into this rabbit hole. In the end, I decided that if I get to a point where the surf band is never used, I will upgrade.
