Trailer bunk replacement best practices

Brisk

Recommended Posts

Getting ready to pull my boat off of the trailer for a couple weeks to have the trailer repainted, new fenders put on and new brakes. I’m going to replace the bunks and carpet as well. What are the best practices for this? Pressure treated lumber vs. standard vs. redwood? Also what is the best type of carpet? I will be through bolting with stainless steel carriage bolts and nylock nuts before I put the new carpet on. Thanks!

Don't forget stainless staples for the carpet.

Get "marine treated" if you can find it.  It should still be CCA, not the new junk that rots out fasteners.  A lot of trailer places here have started using untreated juniper, but it has to be a bigger beam.

Probably over kill, but I cut the leading edge ends down to 45 deg angles and routed the sides and ends before I carpeted the bunks. It seemed to cut down on caret wear and scuffing some.

I used standard lumber a few years ago (non-treated or pressure treated) - got a good deal on some redwood at my local lumber yard.  I went in and said "I'll take the bowed pieces" and they seemed to be thrilled to sell it at a discount and get rid of it.  I used stainless 3/8" staples and bunk fabric from Sailrite.com and one of their electric stapler guns.

I did not wrap the bottom of it completely closed, leaving about a 1-2" gap in the material for drainage.  I put new stainless lag bolts in all of the bunks and predrilled holes so they didn't split the boards.
