2008 Malibu wakesetter 23 lsv crank sensor spn636cm fault

Just bought this boat and took it out for the first time today and it ran good but then started running like it was missing in a cylinder. The Malibu dealer we bought it from had just replaced the crank sensor and assured us it was in good running condition. I heard there could be other issues causing the crank sensor fault. Curious if anyone else has experienced this?

That is  a solid crank position sensor fault.  The ECM does not detect a signal from the CKP sensor for greater than 125 mS.  Back to the dealer she goes!

So what does a person do to fix this? The dealer is 6 hrs away so if I can do it myself It would save me a 

long expensive trip. If I need to by the diacom software I will.

I think the Diacom software/HW is pretty pricey.

 

Your error could be from:

• Physical damage to the CKP sensor or the reluctor wheel

• Excessive play or looseness of the CKP sensor or the reluctor wheel

• Improper installation of the CKP sensor or the reluctor wheel

• Foreign material passing between the CKP sensor and the reluctor wheel

• Excessive air gap between the CKP sensor and the reluctor wheel

• An intermittent condition with the CMP sensor or circuits

Assuming there is not a hidden code or ECM issue, the diagnosis is via:

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the CKP sensor.

2. Test for less than 5 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal B and ground. ⇒ If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.

3. Ignition ON, test for 4.8–5.2 V between the 5-volt reference circuit terminal C and ground. ⇒ If less than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM. ⇒ If greater than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.

4. Test for 4.8–5.2 V between the signal circuit terminal A and ground. ⇒ If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM. ⇒ If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.

5. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the CKP sensor

Well both the ecm and eke sensor have been replaced with only 4 hours on both by a Malibu dealership. I noticed the pigtail had been replaced going to the ekp sensor as well. But I will try to do the test and see what I come up with

AFAIK, they are not available. I've posted the MC wiring diagrams but I do not know if that would help, even it is an Indmar engine.
