DD Motor box hinge mount repair question

Recommended Posts

Curious if anyone has any thoughts on a way to do this better.  The support piece for the motor box hinge mounts that runs across the stringers on my boat is pretty loose and I'd like to snug it up somehow.  Not sure if the previous owner did this or if it came from the factory this way with the 3 lag screws per side.

Looks like the PO used some bigger lag screws in the factory location. (Factory Never used square head (Scrulox) screws anywhere in these boats.)
I had to repair that exact piece once on a brand new boat that came delivered with that part completely loose.
I through drilled two of the existing holes on each side and used some machine screws with washers and nyloc nuts. Was a bit of a pita to install the nuts/washers inside the stringers fiddling through the small vent opening, but in the end totally worth it. Was super sturdy and lasted for 10 Years until I sold the boat.

With the twist load on the crossbar, I would use through bolts with a lengthwise backing plate.  If you do a plate for top and bottom, the top one will make a template as you install the bolts.
