2008 v-Ride w/ 5.7L rescued from a field Sunday

Recommended Posts

Me: Long time boat owner, 1st time Malibu owner. 1st time ballast/wake boat owner.

I just rescued a dirty, leaf and mildew filled 2008 v-Ride been sitting in a field behind prior owner's house way out in the country for sometime. Title says built Oct 2007 for 2008 model year. Indmar 5.7L engine. Indmar manual I found states 5.7 MPFI or 5.7 LCR? Which is it?

I have no history, specs, or other info on it since po did not have much info other than it ran when parked, had been serviced at shop before parking. Hence I am on this forum gathering info and how to.

I am in process of reconditioning it back. Mechanically and cosmetically. This 08 v-Ride has several upgrades or added options to ballast system, entertainment, accessories.

My purchase inspection consisted of getting a battery in it to to power up the systems and see the hours and start the engine, it cranked right up after fuel pump primed, po stated they kept fuel stabilizer in everything so gas was okay. The engine clock has 310 hours so it needs a 300 hour service in addition to usual annual. No on the water test was available.

Question, where can I find and purchase a fuel filter? Appears to have OEM Gen 2 fuel pump/sending unit on the tank. I read where fuel filter to be changed each year or 100 hours on these Gen 2 fuel pumps. Other items I can think of best spark plugs for this engine? Copper, platinum, iridium? Anyone have a wix or napa gold oil filter #? Correct K&N flame arrestor part #? etc.

Thanks for any input and information you can provide.

I probably have other Malibu v-drive relevant questions as I get into this project boat.

welcome to the crew.

my '04 is 320 lcr and is multiport fuel injected (mpfi) so i suspect yours is too.

check out the "boat specs" tab on the top of tmc page to find manuals and specs for your rig.

running an inboard dry can trash the impeller in short order.  if the rig has sat for "sometime" an impeller replacement is required anyway - put it at the top of the list.

consider throwing it in the water (after that impeller swap) and let it warm up good before spending more money.  if it's been neglected it could have a cracked block which could redirect some of your planned maintenance ideas.

An 08 Vride is going to share a lot of parts with 98-04 Sunsetter and Wakesetter VLX.

These parts work are for my 2000 Waksetter (Monsoon 325, Indmar GM 5.7L)

Wix 51061 oil filter

Mobil 1 M1-302a oil filter

Napa 1069

Fuel:

Inline- Wix 33033

Misc:

Oil pressure switch (dash alarm)

-Indmar 645006

-Napa OP6075

Oil pressure sender (gauge)

-Sierra 18-5899

Knock sensor-BWD Part No. S8012

Check out this thread...a lot of good info and a lot of parts will probably work for your boat or at least point you in the right direction...

So in my review of the indmar book for 07-09 5.7L engines I did not see a detailed diagram, or list of engine parts or specs for each engine installed by Malibu.  (FYI, PCM has detailed build and tuneup specs for each model which is what I am use to looking for, such as cam profile, heads, etc.)

So I pinged indmar direct and got this very quick & helpful response so far when I was asking what the exact engine I have when I sent them the serial number off the tag.

"Engine 145180 is a Malibu 5.7L engine they referred to as an 5.7L LCR or a 5.7L LC2. I can help you with parts identification. Let me know what you need. LCR or LC2 were Malibu's designation for a basic Low Cost 5.7L engine that did not have all of the "bells and whistles" of the premium level Monsoon engines.  We wouldn't have a build sheet with that info as we purchased 5.7L Vortec Marine long blocks from GM and added our external components to make it into a complete engine package.

The in-tank fuel pick-up systems were supplied by Malibu so I have no information on the fuel filter."

Hope this helps some other new Malibu owner if they are researching for parts and or specs on their GM based engine.

Tex, whatever you find about the engine internals for the PCM motors is 99.99999999% the same for the indmars.  All marinized GM 5.7's were the same GM long blocks.  As Larry's e-mail to you notes, the differences are the accessories hung on the outside of the long block, which would include intake, ecm, fuel pump, and tune.  For instance, the PCM EX343 and Indmar LCR and Monsoon (the "fancy" Malibu branded 5.7) are all going to use HVS distributor and the same plugs and wires. https://www.bakesonline.com/hvs-ignition-system-tune-up-kit.html.

IIRC the difference between the LCR and Monsoon is an upgraded high output alternator (maybe with serpentine vs "V" belt?), different air intake (your LCR probably just has a spark arrestor and no filter?), different ECM tune, and knock/no knock sensor (Monsoon has knock sensors, hence ability to tune more aggressively).

Indmar and PCM use different oil filters (PCM still uses ford based filters on remote filter mounts).

There's a bit more to the differences between the Monsoon and LCR, aside from price.  https://web.archive.org/web/20110506041501/http://www.indmar.com/ProductLine/Malibu/320-LCR/index.html  vs https://web.archive.org/web/20100417052411/http://www.indmar.com:80/ProductLine/Malibu/Monsoon-340/index.html  (The originals are offline now, hence Wayback snaps)

There is ZERO difference in engine internals, tho.  Crank, cam, piston, head... all are interchangeable between Monsoon and LCR because they are the same long block.

We have an 08 LSV and just did the fuel filter.  This thread was very helpful.  Except our schrader valve was on the port side .  Search 2007 VLX fuel filter location  under Maintenance, Tech Info & Troubleshooting

Welcome to the forum! I just bought a barn find 01 VLX last month. Also my first ski/wake boat. Good luck on the restoration and I hope to follow along for a little inspiration!
