i think its more about not letting them “freeze” up in the holes.  i replaced mine recently (using gap straight out of box by the way which was same as what came out .060 where indmar manual states .040-045).  i did not need them after 550 hours, boat ran fine and i bet it could have gone 1000++ hours

my dealer was ripping me off doing plugs and wires every 100 hours/annually

i just did mine for reasons above at 750 after two unnecessary replacements at 100 and 200 hours 

thinking i might do them again at 1500, now at 950, but that probably not necessary now with covid thats only 1.75-2 more years after doing them this spring. probably go to 1750 -1850 which will be 2.75-3 years from this last spring, so probably unnecessary even then fir performance reasons
