Check and set timing for a 2001 Sportster

Recommended Posts

Carburated indmar engine. Owners manual says timing should be 10 degrees BTDC. About to check with timing light.

Owners manual has a note that a special tool and proceedure is required in order to adjust the timing.

Anyone with an idea of what that is?

The special tool is a Delphi distributer timing shunt.  It plugs into the empty connector on the distributer next to the one the goes to the coil.  The engine must be running and up to temperature, then the wire on the tool is connected to a 12V positive source (like the battery or main starter solenoid post) to put it in base timing mode.  Set the timing using a timing light, adjust your idle speed on the carb, then disconnect the wire on the tool.  If the engine stalls or is turned off, disconnect the wire before restarting the engine to avoid damage to the ignition module.
