Best Malibu Wakeboard Wake?

How would you guys rank the boat lineup by best wakeboard wakes? Just curious as I was surprised to ride behind my buddy’s 2018 A24 with full PNP ballast and found it to be a better wakeboard wake (both size and shape) than my 2019 23LSV with full PNP and same wedge setting.  I haven’t been able to ride any other boats in the lineup so was specifically interested in the 25LSV, 23 MXZ, 24MXZ, M220. Thanks!

Only been behind the 25lsv  and the 24mxz riding stock ballast.  Both boats are good but don't compare to the G23 or SL from a "stock" wake perspective.  I would say of the 2 I have ridden I would take the 25 over the 24.  Personally I have always thought the Axis wakes were a little better than Malibu.  Again, this is talking about WAKEBOARD wake. . . not surf.  I would love to get behind the M220/240.

Not to hijack, but it would be interesting to hear thoughts on both wakeboard and surf waves.  I am ready to sell my 22 MXZ, and trying to read the tea leaves on how the wakes compare between the 24 MXZ, 25 LSV, and M220, all of which are going to be within my price range.  I'm really curious about 24MXZ vs M220 as the lines on the M220 appear to be the direction most flagship wake boats are headed these days.

Well I just got a new 24 MXZ with the M6 and it is bigger than my 2015 23LSV  but not by that much.  (it does have a longer transition which I wanted)  For reference I am an advanced rider and a wake snob and am a little disappointed that I cannot add more weight without the engine struggling.  I have the 17 x 14 prop and in "sport mode" which is supposed to give it more throttle early.  The boat could not get up to speed in lift mode!   I had it set to 22.7 mph and it never got over 21 running with a super washy wake.   I know that all you wake specialists are going to tell me that I must be doing something wrong but I tried it many different ways....  I did have 500 lbs of lead and 2 extra large manual sacks but only my wife driving and me behind the boat.  That should simulate an average size crew for that boat.  I think with the LT4 engine things would be different.  Note to self....   Needless to say I am very disappointed.

I did dump a little stock ballast and still had to use lift mode to get up to full speed....   it took awhile.....  then put the wedge to what I wanted.  I thought for sure it would be the best in the lineup with the new deeper hull but not this one.  It still may be but needs more power.

BTW,  I love everything about the boat other than this (really big) gripe.    I did have the front loaded fairly heavy and the water sprays over the front pretty easily when loaded so this is another concern but not a major issue.  The fit and finish and design does seem better than past Malibu boats.

Lastly,  the wave was absolutely huge and it still had trouble getting up to speed with all the extra weight also....but since this is not my major reason for buying the boat as I love wakeboarding and buy my boats according to the wakeboard wake.

What prop?

What elevation?

Not sure of the prop # but it is an ACME 17 x 14   which is the standard Malibu low pitched high elevation prop.  I am in Dallas Texas at  430' above sea level.

@Gene3x, Do you have one of your manual bags in the bow?  Do that next time just for grins.  Nearly all my dead weight is in the front half of the boat.

I can only give you a reference point FWIW.  Granbury, TX 692' Elevation, '19 25LSV with M6,  Acme 2805 speed prop (17x17).  We were out today surfing, tanks full, 1000lbs of lead, 8yo son, full tank of gas and a wet poodle in the boat.  I realized almost too late we needed to get home in time for an appointment.  No wedge.  We launched up on plane and to 28mph in I'd guess about 6-7 seconds (to plane) 10 seconds total or so to cruise speed.  I really didn't push the throttle hard.  I've done this in the past for wakeboarders and set the wedge with auto-wedge engaged (lift mode till you get to speed - about 23.5mph usually)  and I'm at the limits of my prop with a good crew of 5-6 passengers.  But the M6 engine has HP left to give if I were pitched down a tad which you are doubly so.

If i have all my passengers in the back and none in the front, then the boat is just mis-weighted and it takes a good long time to get up to massive wakeboarding mode.  The angle of the prop shaft and the pitch of the boat just doesn't convert much power to forward movement early on with all the weight in the back until the boat levels out some.  It's the price we pay for the big props to deal with that quirk.

Where do you have all your weight? I can't believe you'd have that problem with the M6 at our elevation.

I don't wakeboard much anymore but I've had my boat fully ballasted + 600# of lead midship and had zero problems getting to mid 20s. I have the 2805 prop on mine which is considered the "speed" prob, however its perfect for everything I need to do and then some.

I really love the 25LSV wake.    I'm not sure if the extra bit of length helps eliminate some bow rise and helps it plane out faster, but I have had no issues planing out with full PNP and a few passengers.   I've heard a few stories now of the MXZ series having issues with the M6, which is really surprising to me but I'm not doubting these owners and what they are reporting.     I'm not an advanced rider by any means but I like the 25LSV wakeboard wake.   Lots of ramp with a little wedge in use.  My only complaint is it can be finicky to run and have clean wake on both sides.  When a rider cuts, it cleans up, but I don't find it to be symmetrical while just running like the older hulls (and smaller boats) I used to own.  It can be done, just not as easy.  The 22MXZ was a really easy setup and a great wake.  I did ride a 23MXZ last weekend - it was really nice as well.   I had a few adult beverages in me so can't give a full report other than it was a fun ride!

I am thinking I have to much weight in the bow.  200lbs of lead and one 350lb sack  plus stock.  The bow was about to take on water it was sitting so low.  I should have taken pics but had there been other boats we would have been easily swamped.

I am seriously jealous by you description of being able to jump up to speed loaded with extra weight but of course this new 24MXZ is 6000 lbs dry.  Gonna give it another try tomorrow moving weight around.

Send me a pm with your exact weight setup, wedge, speed, and such and I’ll get out this weekend early if I can and see what mine does just for comparison.  I should be able to beg or borrow enough led and stuff to make it work as long as I do t get too many surprise weekend guests.

Funny man, read my “M5 Disappointment” thread. I’ve had almost the exact same reaction about my ‘19 23LSV. I had to pitch down to a 15x13 and still cannot plane out with the PNP full even with extra bow weight and 1 person in the boat. I was bummed and surprised more noise wasn’t made about these boats not being able to run “stock” PNP ballast for wakeboarding, but the truth is very few people are riding at wake speeds anymore especially with a slammed boat. I’ve learned to deal with it, but I’ve had to drop down to 50% full or less with a full crew and the wake isn’t great...thus this thread.

Getting older I prefer a bigger and steeper wake as I’ve turned into a W2W rider. The A24 is bigger and steeper than my 23LSV with the same ballast, speed, and wedge angle making tricks a lot easier IMO. I’ll be curious to ride behind your 24. That’s the boat we almost bought but couldn’t sell the wife on the pickle fork.

I've ridden the entire 2021 lineup besides the M220, and here's my opinion.  All with stock ballast (pnp where applicable), 75' rope, 22.6 mph and wedge in 3 or 4.

1) M240

2) 25LSV

2.1) 2021 A24 (This wake is insane)

3) 2021 23LSV (Perfect shape, good size, probably my favorite wakeboard wake right now)

4) 2021 24MXZ and 23MXZ are really close as well with the 24MXZ having more transition.  But, I bet with some additional weight the 24MXZ could jump a few spots.

You can flip a coin between T23, 22LSV, T22, A22, A20.  All really good, clean with the shorter boats having slightly less transition.

eubanks, hopefully next week I'll be testing out a 2021 A24 with the m6.  I'll let you know if there is any issues getting on plane.  Elevation should be similar to you.  If they will let me, I plan on slamming the boat as much as possible.

Pretty much on point.

Id swap 25LSV with 2021 A24, but i also have not ridden or seen the 21 25lsv only a 2019 or 2020 not sure if its changed.

Sorry man I did not see this post until just now.....  but my setup is full plug and play w/ supposedly 750's in the back on top (although it does not look like 750lbs more like 550's if we are being honest)  200lbs of lead in the bow (100 in the anchor locker and 100 moved around to adjust balance weight)  , all the rest of the lead is mid ship by the batteries and behind the captains chair. Plus 5 or 6 people or an extra 1000lbs sac in the middle, then driver and rider or even more.   I think it is the prop getting slippage but who knows.

Jarrett, lets do it man!  I need your input on this because my 2015 was money and almost wish I had it back now.

Is the M240 that much better wakeboard wake?  How much better?   Is the A24 really that much better than the 24MXZ?   I wish I had this feedback before I bought.

From the sounds of it I’m running about 700lbs or so lighter than you. Everything is about the same except  3-4 extra bodies or the fat sac. I loaned out 200lbs of lead to dial in a buddies wake so I’m probably closer to 1000 lbs lighter at this moment. That’s a good difference and might explain things. I’ve had it loaded up as much as yours, but don’t remember how long it took to plane just that it did

See if you can borrow a 3077 prop to see if there’s any difference. Slightly higher pitch.
