Electronic Drain On Battery

Recommended Posts

I’m still having a problem with both batteries draining down when boat is not used for two weeks. Boat is a 2011 VLX.
1. Both batteries are Cranking batteries

2. Switch is 1, Both, Off.

i know that I should have one cranking a one deep cycle battery.

My question is:

Do the boat electronics have a small constant drain on batteries to keep certain electronic powered.

Thanks

IF the switch is wired properly, NOTHING should be able to draw in the off position.  I’d pop the switch off and check the back to see how it’s wired.

On the other hand, we often wire the automagic bilge pump circuit direct to the battery, bypassing the battery switch.  A bilge pump running constantly (rain, boat leak, pump stuck on) can certainly drain down a battery.

Weak/damaged batteries will self drain.  Might want to have them checked out.  We throw out 6 or 7 NeverStarts a week.

Last night I spent 3 hours rewiring my battery switch. I have a Perko that is setup for 2 batteries. When I bought the boat, it also had a discharge problem. What I found is that, with the switch off, the helm still had full power. Why? because on the common post was just the starter, not helm. Helm was wired directly to the batteries. According to the Perko website helm should be also on the common post, therefore taking all power from all switches when the battery switch is off. Unless, like was said earlier, the bilge is wired to the battery directly. Long story, look and see that the wires for the helm are in fact wired to the common post.

I'd show pictures, but haven't finished my subscription yet.
