Turn down exhaust tips

Has anyone installed the Malibu turn down exhaust tips who can address whether they reduce the exhaust smell, (carbon dioxide) for the surfers?

 Thanks!

I have a turned down tipped on my 18 and you can still see the exhaust right in front of the rider. I'm going to instal a FAE this winter.

Downturns won't do anything to help with CO.  They're for noise reduction only.  The closer to the water you run them, the quieter they are, but they're still putting the exhaust above the waterline.  Only FAE which puts it into the prop wash will get the exhaust out behind your surfer.  But then it's right in your kids' faces when you're pulling tubes... :)

I'm going to add them this fall. It should reduce emissions somewhat for us because of lots of trunk ballast.

Only worry is hydrolock from water backup without the flaps

I went from flappers to the STE (silent tip exhaust, the factory Malibu turn-down with baffles) and then to FAE (Fresh Air Exhaust).  If you want to reduce fumes/CO, get an FAE.

"Should" = won't.  Been there, done that, 1100's in each rear locker, at the time ~3000 total ballast + floating wedge (little more now).  It will be quieter, but not as quiet as the FAE and will not reduce fumes at the back of the boat.

I don't surf, so I can't answer about the fumes, but I switched from flappers to factory turn-downs with baffles several years ago and have not noticed any sort of problem when in reverse.  I do have a direct drive with mufflers, though.

I installed them on my direct drive.  Maybe I don't notice it, but we have zero issues with fumes when surfing and our pocket is small so we are close to the platform.  I don't remember it being any better or worse than with the flappers.

The STE's are definitely quieter.

I recently made up some ghetto turned down tips on my DD to see if the chrome tips would be worth it.    Big improvement in noise and no more exhaust smell while surfing.

Glad I watched the video.    My hull has the stepped transom so changing the tips would be a total PITA.     The fish will laugh at me but whatever.
